2000 1.3 Speedo Fault - Help - percypond
Hello i have just bought my first car a 1.3 ford fiesta finesse 2000.

Its done aprox 47,000 miles.

Everything seems fine with the car (except one thing) and on the test drive everything was ok. However on the way home from picking it up i've noticed there is a fault with the speedo. Sometimes it sits at zero and othertimes it jumps into action.

Because im a new driver who lives right down a road with about 11 speed camera(traps) i need to sort it pretty quick so i dont get any points!!!

Anyone know what could be wrong, if its a big job and how much i'm gunna be looking at spending?

Thanks for anyone that helps me out.

Louise

When it jumps into action does the reading seem to be about right or is it working but giving silly readings?

Yes it seems to be right, infact i am almost certain it is right when it does work, i drove home behind a friend who said he was doing 40mph and whats what mine said when it was working. Its not erratic or anything just sometimes doesnt work and then sometimes seems to.

Thanks Louise

If the speedo and the odometer fail at the same time, then i would suspect that the speed sensor on the gearbox is at fault.Does this car have a digital mileometer readout?

Yes it has a digital readout (is that bit the odometer?). As far as i can tell thats working fine.

I've just been driving around and it seems to be working ok but i feel like i cant trust it now, it seems delayed especially when accelerating.

Well since i last wrote its had a core plug go which meant it was towed and replaced etc. Apparrently theres 4 and the one that had gone on mine needed the gearbox taking out to replace.

This has been done and the car is now working but the speedo has given up altogether now- even if i smack it, it wont start working this time. Also its stopped counting the miles which it used to before this core plug was replaced?

Any ideasi've heard the speedo was linked to the gearbox from 2000 models?

Any ideas would really appreciate it.

Thanks

Because the intermittant speedo fault has turned into a pernament one! I'd be sure it wasn't counting all the miles before!

The gearbox-mounted speed sensor is a common failure point, especially on Focuses.

Take 100 years off that and you might be nearer the mark.
