Which colour does it look best in? - Rob E
Hi,

I'm flirting with the idea of a Fiat 500 1.2 Lounge, probably not for at least another year (thought I'd let supply improve) but was wondering which colour you people think it suits best.

Apparently 80% of them are being sold in white. The Fiat used site has only solid white and red. I think it looks good in solid white (not the bluey whitey pearl). Solid red and solid yellow seem to make it look even more like the original 500, as they're similar shades to the colours the original one came in.

Personally I'm going to avoid white as I want to be a bit different, and think there is a good choice of fun metallics. In particular, there is an olive green metallic shade which I think would look nice (and kind of 60s/70s retro). I think that because of the demand for this car, the colour choice is pretty unimportant to residuals, especially as Fiat don't offer it in any silly colours (as Honda seems keen to do with the Jazz).

So, any views on the olive green? Or have you seen it in another non-white or non-red shade which looks good? Please let me know, many thanks.

Robbie.

I don't know the answer to the question, but I did see a solid white one in the showroom with Italian tricolor stripes, and it looked fantastic.
I bet it'd look filthy in seconds of driving though.

Saw one in powder blue (baby blue?) recently which was nice.

I have seen black ones, which don't quite work to my eyes (though I don't like black cars in general)

I have seen a few blue ones, and they just looked mucky (it was a kindofa dirty-looking dark blue).

The rest have either been white, which looks good without or without stripes ... but I think that the nicest ones are the pearly off-white. Those look gorgeous.

My little sis has a white one, which is a sort of creamy white. Looks good, doesnt look too dirty too soon, apart from flies etc.. on the front, they seem to stand out a lot, particularly since there is little grill area to help hide them.

Its HAS to be in white. Lovely

White or (Cha Cha Cha) Azure.

As long as the red is a nice bright pillarbox red, I'd go for that. To me at least, small cars look great in red, for some reason big cars rather less so.

Make sure they give you a good long test drive, as although I haven't tried one myself (SWMBO was set on, and loves, her second Mini) I'ver seen road tests that say they aren't as much fun to drive as the cheeky lopoks would lead you to expect.

Have seen just the one and if it's the same colour that I think you mean it was a solid pastel shade called "ye ye green" and not metallic, somewhere between a moss and olive sort of colour. It was the Pop model in a local Fiat showroom and the salesman said it was the first he had ever seen in that colour....and that it has been sold within 1 hour of parking it in the showroom. Looked very different but perhaps a little too retro in an austere post-war kind of way rather than 50's/60's chic.

Just went on the FIAT website and had a play with the "configure" thingy. Love the green Rob E. Really retro. Also liked the orange.

I think that's the other green. There are two. The pastel is chiaro (I think) verde.

That'll be the colour of PU's eyes, I suppose.

Hi guys,

Many thanks for your varied and informed responses. I think that if I go for it, I'll go for the 'ye ye green', as I quite like the idea of daring to be different, and one of the above responses suggests it's nice. I remember Jeremy Clarkson raving about the Skoda Roomster in a shade of olive green, so I think it's becoming quite an 'in' colour. Many thanks guys, as I say I'm going to wait a bit and by then I may have actually seen one in ye ye green in the flesh!

Cheers again guys :)

Well said Rob. It's the sort of car you could buy and never sell. Majorly cool, even when it is ready for its pension. The whole point of buying such a car is to have something a wee bit different. The green colour just helps that. Hope you find one to suit in due course. Sort of thing you can show photos of to yet unborn decendants !

Hmmm, I clearly have too much time on my hands! I've spent about an hour trawling ebay and Autotrader, and can confirm that a Fiat 500 in 'ye ye green' is as elusive as a Hyundai i10 (actually, perhaps much more so). I did see what it looks like in several shades, and must say that punk grey looks awful (non-metallic, military type colour). Black seems to do little for it, nor does dark blue, but it does look gorgeous in solid white with an Italian stripe down the side... oh no, I'm being sucked into getting a white one... stop me now! ;)

There's a driving instructor round my way that has a mushroomy kind of beige coloured one (non metallic) that also looks a bit drab... perhaps it's punk grey?

I've also seen them in silver, which I didn't think suited it particularly, and red white and black, which all looked great IMO, though the stripes seem to vary in style and effect

Olive green is commonly used for camouflage, so the chances are it won't be as visible to other motorists as a bright colour. Buy the brightest colour you can stand, to reduce the chances of another car colliding with yours both when it's moving and when it's parked. I learned this lesson from bitter experience, and my favourite colour is now solid red. Not for nothing are municipal fire appliances painted red.

Zzzzzzzzzzzz...........

Wouldn't want a Ford Ka in drag any more than I'd want a VW Golf in drag. Colour? Colour's for girls.

What L'escargot means (though he doesn't know it!) is - go for Tropicalia Yellow. I saw one in France, and it looked good. That's what I fancy.

Though I reluctantly admit that it probably looks better in white.

The Fiat configurator does little justice to the ned effect of colour/spec on the 500.

I have a white one which is great in my opinion, with red leather.

But, having recently attended the 'AutoItalia' show and seeing most of the colours, 95% looked great in the flesh.

The punk grey is a pearlescent and looks stunning in the sun, drab in cloud, perhaps not a colour for the UK then.

Funk white is pearlescent, just introduced, rare at the moment. Bossa Nova White is the most common at present.

Mod blue is tunning when clean.

Ye Ye Green with tan leather probably the most retro of all.

For a true insight, go to FiatForum.com and look at members motors, no two cars the same, but a real benefit before speccing your own.

I've seen a couple around painted in the light green colour similar to that Jeremy Clarkson painted his Fiat Coupe "Police Car".

I think it's the best colour I've seen.

I didn't realise that that was available. Now I do, I recommend that on the basis of its visibility to other road users.

I saw one the other day in a sort of slightly pinkish battleship grey. Very nice I thought.

full marks to Fiat's Mktg/PR people who, following a great design, have managed to do almost as good a brand promotion a job as BMW's Mini team. e.g. In the Dly Mail today, there as a full page by one of their top feature writers who took a red 500 down to Chelsea to see how "sexy" it was. He attracted plenty of admiring attention, well not he - cos he's middle aged - but the car was pronounced Cool.

next door have just got one in a deep red. only car i can recall stopping to look over! it looked great. i normally go for larger cars but im quite tempted by one of these little cars!

It's got to be the creamy off-white colour. Looks fantastic.

Like audiA6tdi, I normally prefer bigger cars, but I love the 500. It just looks right. The Abarth is particularly appealing.

Cheers

I have the olive green. I never expected to buy a green car, but it was amazingly beautiful! The dash on the Lounge is white and olive and it is so bright and cheerful that I drove it out of the showroom.
