05 "check parking brake" warning - seahouses1
hi, ive just bought a 2005 Renault scenic grand today, on the way home from the garage i noticed the computer said "check parking brake", i went straight back to the garage, and was told that when it went through its pre sale service the computer wasnt reset, and to drop it back for the day so they could reset it, i was just wondering if this was correct, as ive had a lot of problems with electronics on cars before,

appreciate anyones info,

regards alan

Are you saying that the parking brake was not on (i.e you had forgotten to fully release it when you set off, which is what I would assume the message meant)?
service warnings - seahouses1
no, when im using the brake the message changes to "parking brake on" or "parking brake off" but always returns to "check parking brake", also on the top of the screen is a red triangle with a "p" in it and service in bold red letters.
yet when you flick through the computer it says it isnt due a service for 18000 miles

cheers alan

Hi,

I've just bought a 2005 Grand Scenic and am having exactly the same problem. The missus just called me to say that she is stuck in a car park and can't go anywhere as the parking brake won't release.

Did you get yours sorted out ok ?

Trotz,
It sounds rather like the EPB has siezed on. (Not uncommon on these things.) If your lucky, it may just have taken out the fuse. If not, it's a complete new unit.

A while back I met a bloke whose Scenic handbrake had packed up (something to do with the computer IIRC) and was quoted a £1000 to have it fixed. He wasn't a happy bunny as the car was out of warranty.

Why the hell can't manufacturers just leave these things alone? I notice VW are fitting electronic handbrakes to some models now.

I'm looking forward in the future to getting one of those awards from the manufacturers from their efficiency savings schemes by suggesting they fit 'manually operated stopping devices'. Or handbrakes as we used to call them.

What's wrong with a couple of cables and a lever?

Probably a bit late now, but for future reference, there is an 'emergency' mechanical release under the centre panel of the boot floor.

"Probably a bit late now, but for future reference, there is an 'emergency' mechanical release under the centre panel of the boot floor."

So how will that be used if you're alone and stuck on a hill - won't releasing this make it start moving when you're not in it?

Leave it in gear??
service warnings - rtj70
I assume this override is a physical one for an electronically controlled brake, hence being in the boot. Yeh leaving in gear would work.

I do belive that once the overide in the boot has been activated you have to visit the dealer to repair/re-engage the mechanism.I may be wrong pehaps someone else will confirm. The other draw back I once had was engine wont start so electronic break wont release, was unable to get to emegency brake release as boot was full and parked hard up to wall. On another ocassion after filling with petrol unable to start engine therefore unable to move from filling pump much to the annoyance of the petrol station.
Whoever thinks of these gimmicks wants a good kick up the ******.

Our emergency override was activated after the car was misfueled (didn't want to risk switching the ignition on), and it was recovered onto a truck. It hasn't been in to the dealers since and the brake still works fine.

You can release the brake without starting the engine or touching the emergency release. If the keycard is in the slot, pulling the handbrake "lever" out, and pressing the little button in the middle will release the handbrake.

I've seen this done on ours when having tyres fitted, and for the rear wheel bearing inspection on the MOT.

I was sceptical of this system, like many others on the car, but none have given any trouble to date. My friendly mechanic always takes the time to lube up the mechanism at service time though.

The scenic I had did not release as you mentioned without engine running. Perhaps they were modified I had one of the very first scenics with this gimmick fitted. The other thing was you could remove the keycard and leave the engine running.

Ours has the "Hands free Renault card" system, so the card only needs to be on your person to operate the car, rather than installed in the reader. The only exceptions are if you want to release the parking brake manually, or open the boot with the engine running, in which case the card needs to be in its reader. Trying to do either of these without the card inserted promotes a beep, and a flashing of the illumination around the reader slot.

This system has similar problems though, in that you can wander off with the card and the engine will still run. It will intermittently beep, and show "CARD NOT DETECTED" in the display, but it still runs, and presumably drives. I would expect the engine to stop as soon as it loses comms with the key. It would have been an excellent anti car-jack device if nothing else. It definitely does not unlock or start without a keycard in range though.

Ah you have the proximity keycard , mine had to be in the slot . You could certainly drive off without my card in the slot you could even lock the vehicle and walk away.Or drive away and leave the keycard in the house only to discover this miles from home as I believe a few people did.

Hello,
DP, i see you are quite familiar with renault parking brakes, please describe me in details how to manualy release the parking break (which is stuck) on laguna 2006.
Thank you in advance.

Scenic Handbrake Fault - Grant J

I have recently had the handbrake failure on our Scenic 55 plate. I took it to a Renault specialist (Drivers Only in Addlestone) and he tried a few times to reset it, no luck. I also tried removing the battery for 10 minutes also no luck. I reluctantly booked it into SMC Renault, in the mean time one of the HT Coils failed so the engine was missing. I replaced all four and all was good, but I noticed that the HT leads was badly scorched by arcing up the sides due to the ceramic breaking down. The next day Renault were able to reset the computer within minutes.

Speaking to a friend who is also an electronics engineer, we agreed this could have been a factor and why the cars computer was reporting a handbrake fault.

This is hard to prove but, if anyone else has a computer fault it is worth checking, especially as I notice most of these cars mentioned here are of an age where the HT leads will be around 5 - 7 years old.

I have exactly same problem, can't seem to get answers anywhere. top of the screen is a red triangle with a "p" in it and service in bold red letters. I just recently bought it and was told nothing that effects cars running, but still curious as to what it is and means, so can get cleared.

I think you should be very wary. Scenic handbrakes are infamous. I've owned 3 Scenics, all MK 2. The cost of replacing these is significant. They are quite a complex item with their own ECU that communicates via the multiplexed network. At a guess I'd say the garage doesn't have the skill or tools or is unwilling to spend money to get this fixed. I'd ask a MOT station if such a fault light is a fail. After all it is part of the braking system. The car has a fault and should be fixed unless you bought it knowing it had this fault. My current Scenic occasionally throws up such a fault which means it doesn't auto apply the parking brake when turning the engine off and leaves the cooling fan running. Such faults can stop other seeminly unrelated systems working as they should.
