Duckhams Oils - where are they now ? - Paul I
Bit of a retro question this but where has Duckhams oils gone to ? I know they belong to an era of TR7's and Rover SD1's etc . Can't find anything on the net about them.

I note they are sold by very few (handfull) on retailers who are specialist in Rover parts etc

Is a brand from the 70's like Mobil 1 from the early 90's that will pass into history ?

Perfectly good quality old-style multigrade whose main attraction to users must have been its soothing green coloration. Castrol which occupied a similar niche in the market, the same one actually, was the same colour as other oils but had green packaging cues.

I imagine the castor oil that used to protect vintage racing engines being abused, and that smells so fabulous when being burned in the paddock at say Shelsley Walsh, is presumably colourless like the stuff they used to give us for constipation. I've never checked though.

Castrol R wasn't (isn't) colourless at all, it had a fairly standard greenish-blueish sort of tinge, but the smell aaahhh! We were so hooked on it that we used to squirt a drop or two into the bellmouths on our Tiger Cubs etc. and blip away for hours. An early form of sniffing I suppose - lovely. Useless for road bikes I remember, used to gum up unless changed frequently, and very, very dear. You can still find it at Classic meetings I think.

A little Googling suggests BP own Castrol & Duckhams now.

What's wrong with a straightforward 20/50 multigrade anyway?

Time was when everything took it.

People with experience of using that grade of oil will tell you that it was fine, except that anecdotal evidence suggests that engines using that stuff also seemed to suffer from worn pistons and worn big-end bearings.

With the modern 0w-30 and 0w-20 etc. synthetics, those complaints seem to be unheard of.

20/50 oil was designed for the mini engine back in 1958 , because the engine/gearbox were combined , had this not happened , you would all be using monograde oils,

duckhams seems to have disapeared , but roumour has it that Halfords buy the own brand from them

As someone said above, Duckhams is now, along with Castrol, owned by BP.

Reading the shareholder bumph I was sent, it seems they are currently actively marketing Castrol (Edge and Magnatec) for their Synthetic and Semi Synthetic motor car oils in the UK.

Whether they will actively market the Duckhams name in the UK goodness knows.

You can get Duckhams Classic 20/50 at my local accessories shop.

I noticed at my most recent oil change National used Castrol Magnatec in place of the Duckhams QXR they used previously. Perhaps Duckhams is now to be considered as a non premium brand, rather like Dunlop tyres.

Back in the late 70's I ran mid 60's Triumph Heralds and invariably used (rather than lost) Castrol like it was going out of fashion but Duckhams stayed put. I gather that the approved oil for my Polo is a Castrol product but it's stayed put so far.

I was in India recently and saw adverts (modern ones) for Duckhams car oils.

My dad used both Duckhams Hypergrade and Castrol GTX in the 70s and 80s in his Fords, check out these ads for a bit of nostalgia :

I used to hate the smell of Duckhams Q 20W-50.

I seem to remember that Century Oils (usually found only in "trade" motor factors) was the same colour as Duckhams; has that disappeared from sale too?

Ah - memories - I ran my 850 Gp1 mini on "R" for a while. Too expensive, though - even for limited competition, ( and you ha d to flush out all the mineral oil first), so I went back to Duckham's Q20/50
I ran my Cooper 970S on Duckham's too for some club racing. In fact I met my better half at Snetterton! (40 yrs. anniversary - Ruby- I think, next year!)

What are you all going on about? As I said above, Duchams oil is still made and is available in my local shop. You can buy the entire range here:

About 25 years ago our weekly delivery of oil, to the chain of motorist discount shops that I spent a brief spell with, was Duckhams, BP (Visco?) and our "own brand," were all delivered from the same place in a nice Alexander Duckhams van. Only apparent difference was price, but marketing made sure they each had their own customers.

Duckhams QXR synthetic was still being advertised up to the mid-90s in Car and similar magazines, big double-page spreads, too.

Also on Castrol R -- it's still the oil of choice for 4-stroke classic race engines that have a lot of roller bearings in them, also for 2-stroke racers that use premix.

In premix it's horrible to work with, won't mix on cool days and separates out within 48 hours but racers reckon it gives unsurpassed last-ditch lubrication when you push the envelope. Extremely high film strength and extreme resistance to shear & scuff forces.

But conversely, R used to smell horrible in strokers, really sickly I seem to remember.

Century Oils and Silkoline Oils are now called Fuchs Oils.

If I was the marketing manager I would rebrand the product .

It's nice to see that the oil still attracts such interest. If Alexander Duckham was alive today I'm sure he'd have invented something at the cutting edge. He was my great uncle and sponsored Bleriot's flight across the channel. His father and brother were great innovators too. I have some Duckham Dinky Toys, but as for the oil, everything runs its course.

IIRC the green colour and smell of Duckhams Q was because it contained a large proportion of recycled oil.

Although Duckhams claimed in the 70's that the same Duckhams Q was used in Formula 1 cars, I very much doubt it. My memory of it was I associate it with engines that subsequently developed oil burning problems from valve stem wear and/or piston ring wear.

You can still buy the full range of Duckhams products they never went away.

Duckhams Oils - where are they now ? - RT

Duckhams is just one of BP's brands, like Castrol and Veedol, although they're trying to sell the brand. BP have withdrawn all advertising for Duckhams and focus on Castrol.

I doubt it's any different to Castrol - it is simply a brand.

There was nothing innovative or cutting edge about Duckham's oil other than on the marketing side.

Your so right Steve there are and were far better oils available.
