Hi, can anyone recommend a decent book on the anatomy of a car - something that provides practical text and illustrations for learning about the working parts of a car and how those components work as a whole, etc, as well as practical sections on fault finding and, maintenance and repair. I'm basically looking for a book that manages to bridge the gap between texts for the totally uninitiated and service manuals full of complex specifications.
Anything that covers the engine, transmission, electrical & ignition systems, brakes, steering & suspension, body & chassis, etc but also goes into detail about the working parts. For example, topics for the engine may include individual detail on the crankshaft, flywheel, piston, valve timing, tappets, camshaft, carburettor, etc, etc.

I can't think of a general one, although they must exist probably in the hundreds. But I learned, as most people do, piecemeal, and haven't needed basic explanations (except of new inventions) since I was a child.
What is the intended purpose? If you have a car, you could do a lot worse than start with a Haynes manual for that model. Not always totally user-friendly, but lots of cutaway and/or exploded drawings showing how it all goes together.

Can't go wrong with the AA ones.
For the Original Poster, try popping down to the local library, and perusing a few volumes there, then go to ebay or amazon and look for the one you thought was most informative.

Thoroughly recommend Hillier's Fundamentals of Motor Vehicle Technology, Book 1.
Superb book, it assumes you know next to nothing and takes you through the basics, clearly explained with excellent diagrams. Used to support young lads starting out NVQ etc.
500 pages, £15 on Amazon. Excellent value, unlike some of Haynes which tends to assume the reader knows a fair amount initially.

Don't know if this is exactly what you are after, but I found a digital copy of 'Auto Repair For Dummies, By Deanna Sclar ISBN: 978-0-7645-5089-8' and despite being written for the american market, and big mistakes in their spelling and phrasing, tires instead of tyres, brake rotors instead of brake discs, it was a really good intro to car maintenance and troubleshootings.
I had downloaded it for Mrs W, but must admit, found it fun to browse through. Bit like the generic Haynes stuff they do, practical and useful if you already have some experience on the oily bits.

The "Fundamentals of Automotive Electronics" by the same author is good too.
