Unusual tyre size problem - moonshine {P}
Hi everyone, I'm hoping you might be able to help me out with something that has been puzzling me for while.

I will soon need to get some new tyres for my car. Ok, so not normally a problem, but unfortunately it is when the size is not standard. I need to get 225/60/14 tyres - my local indy cant get them and the online places don't appear to have them either. I thought this might be the case as I read on a forum a few years back that this size tyre was no longer being made.

So I guess I have two options - either go for a different size tyre, or buy new wheels. I would prefer to go for a different size tyre as I want to keep the original wheels.

So what range of tyre sizes can safely be fitted and does anyone know of any good places to get aftermarket wheels? 205/60/14's seem to be easy to get, would this leave the overall diameter of the wheel the same? (i.e will the speedo still be correct?)

Any advice or ideas will much apreciated :)

Tech details as follows:

Yes. 205 is the tyre width, 60 is the tyre height, and 14 is the wheel diameter. As the tyre height remains the same, then the rolling radius will still be the same.

I'm not so sure Dave. I'm more than prepared to be corrected but I had always thought that the profile was an expression of the height as a percentage of width. IE a 60 profile being 60% of the 205 or 225 respectively. In that instance a narrower tyre of the same profile would in fact have a smaller circumference. But that might be rubbish !

This is exactly what Im not sure about - if the profile is a percentage of tyre width or wheel size.

Correction, yes it is. Sorry. Info below.

There is also a tyre size calculator there as well. Or you can use one of the many that come up with a google search - eg

Dave - thanks for the links, the carbibles site is excellent.

I think you may have to change wheels and probably go to at leat 15" if not 16".

What car takes those kind of tyres?
Unusual tyre size problem - Group B
This calculator here: www.alloywheels.com/tyrecalc.asp , recommends tyre diameter is kept within 2.5% of the original tyres.
According to this a 205/60/14 will be smaller, and is outside their recommendation.

A 205/65/14 will be a much closer match but narrower/higher profile tyres may have an adverse effect on handling?

Is this for your Celica Supra, with the original wheels you dont want to get rid of? Or you could keep checking on ebay for some Toyota 4x114 wheels in 15" diameter.

225/60/14 seem to be available in the US, but probably not cheap to have 4 tyres shipped over?. snipurl.com/2kdlf
I guessed this size might still be popular for older american cars, so if you could find a specialist UK company that imports them for this usage?

There is a list here of wheel PCDs, offsets and centre bore sizes for most manufacturers: www.carpartfactors.com/alloywheeltechchart.htm

I presume there are insurance implications of going to a non-standard size?

Changing to a smaller diameter wheel may cause fouling and/or cooling problems with the brakes.

Thanks to all for the replies so far.

As much as I would love to go to 15 or 16 inch wheels (this would give a much better choice of tyres) I dont think modern designs really suit the car and I want to keep the car as original as possible.

The BFGoodrichs are the same as what I currently have fitted (although branded as Avon). I think the shippings costs would be too high for me have them sent over. Maybe as part of large batch for an importer it might be worthwhile.

Insurance - good point, I'll give them a call and let them know.

JC2 - certainly would not be going to wheels smaller than a 14 inch (the only way is up!) so I can't forsee any issues with the brakes.

Why not look for a Toyota owners club or a Celica forum? You are not the only person with this type of car so someone else may already have solved your problem.

Expat - Amazing! - I havn't been on the forum for a while and I found this thread that was started only a couple of days back

forums.celicasupra.com/showthread.php?p=466623#pos...3

So it looks like Toyo are still making (or have stock of) 225/60/14s - although I dont need them yet I might get a set of 4/5 and stash them away.

Quick question - are tyre places ok with fitting customer supplied tyres?

Unusual tyre size problem - moonshine {P}

Update - looks like the toyos may be old stock - the guy on the forum who got them said they were made in 2005 - 3 years old already :(
Unusual tyre size problem - jc2
Most tyre places are quite happy to fit customer supplied tyres-at a cost and no guarantee.

Henry & Whisky - thanks for the links, great find.

£60 a corner seems a very fair price, I've dropped them an email to ask how many they have and when they were manufactured.

I have found RSR to be helpful and professional in the way they do things. Well, to be more accurate, a year or so ago, twice at the Croydon branch when we needed matching tyres for the Honda Jazz.

Dulwich - thanks for the recomendation - keen prices and a professional service - almost sounds too good to be true!

The tyre place I normally go to has good prices and they do a good job, but boy are they a miserable bunch!
