2001 2.0 hdi cooling system management problems - wrigley
Hi all

Had this car mot ed last week as earlier announced and sure enough got problems now first one got bill for £257

rear brake pads and discs to fix handbrake which now does not hold the car on a slope

failed also on wrong colour rear repeaters which has not been mentioned in previous three tests with same bulbs, they had to be orange

also high emmisions for turbo deisel engine corrected by new fuel filter and engine flush

collected friday wife drove saturday no apparent problems but today going to dads for fathers day and all lights on dash going mad specifically stop sign flashing with audible warning for about 30 secs red warning light above temp gauge and temp gauge not registering any temp.stopped car got out opened bonnet cooling fan running when engine cold no loss of coolant and they managed to break one of the rubber mounting pylons for the engine cover that I only changed six months ago What is causing all these problems? I suspect that whilst carring out the repair fuel fiter etc. they have broken or dislodged some sensor on water temp that is now telling the engine management system there is a cooling problem when there is not any citroen wizzos who can help. also when we got home can not operate cental door locking with key fob is this connected? thanks guys

It's the little brown one; gearbox end of the head. It's networked to everything and disconnecting it does all of those things.

Thanks for that screwloose
Ive been and looked but can not see a brown connector in this area only a yellow one about the size of a match box is this it?
I gave it a wiggle now locking works but cooling alert still there?

In that case we need to resolve the dichotomy in the header; is this a 1900 diesel or a 2.0 HDi?

on logbook 1997cc xsara lx hdi and on drivers door pillar 90hp

{now changed to 2.0 HDi}

Right; that clears that up - it's an RHY engine. [They sold both a 1.9D and the 2.0HDi in parallel.]

Look down past the convoluted rubber bit on the air trunking and you should see an alloy water housing on the end of the head. There should be a sensor screwed into it.

If it doesn't have a brown connector plug; look for a greeny one with a yellow, plastic, band on it.

I have found the problem I think there is a black box like the old relay boxes in that area with a multi pin plug and two brass threaded poles one has one lead on the other with two connected to it is broken from the box and on the end is like a brass thermostat probe which goes into the box can you identify this component from the description and how much is a new one it looks like someone has forced there arm or hand through the space where the leads are and put pressure on the connector forcing it from the housing there is clear evidence that the probe has been forced sidways to breaking point as the base of the box and hole it has left is elongated I am currently gluing this probe back in place as a temporary fix will this work

Thanks again

I have now also checked the green plug on the housing at the end of the cylinder head and it appears to be in good condition and connector securly fitted?

Don't know what it's doing there; but two threaded terminals sounds like the glow-plug relay - and the melted terminal sounds very like the glow-plug relay.... [They don't need heat to start.]

If you've got a meter, measure the resistance between the pins of that green sensor; 6000 Ohms cold; 600 Ohms hot.

Hi screwloose

sorry about the delay you were totally correct as usuall with your diagnosis thanks very much for your help

part i described was heater plugs relay and are about £52.00 so I will wait till winter as it is starting fine now

replaced the green coolant sender plug cost £15.00 and it solved all other problems
thanks again for your advice

Hi Wrigley,

I was wondering if you knew what may be the cause and cure for my car problem.

I drove from a slip road on motorway last week and when accelerating quickly to around 80mph the engine seemed to cut out and automatically set its speed limit at 70mph regardless of the accelaration pedal, it also has the yellow engine symbol lit on the dashboard. Obviously it slows down ok.

Now it has no guts at all, and wont go past 70 mph (which is a nightmare when your drive 100per day).

My guess is that is the emmissions are putting it into a safety mode, and the remedy is a new fuel fitler and engine flush.

Thoughts?

I shall also ask screwloose (citroen xsara guru).

Cheers

[This would be better as a stand-alone thread. I've no time for tacky-ons.]

Anything but a Citroen guru; but I do know a little about HDIs.

What year and engine is yours? Get the fault codes read as it isn't anything to do with emissions - one of the few things the ECU doesn't monitor.
