Wondered how many of us have ever seen one of these? Certainly my first, on the A77 Ayr bypass, in the layby just north of where the road crosses the River Ayr. Silver Vauxhall Astra estate, well marked, with red LED sign saying what it was. Camera on a tripod just behind the car.

Wish we could do a poll on this forum - it would give an idea of how common these are.

I see them regularly. According to the local rag they have (or in the process of setting up) a number of fixed ones in choke points round here.

Can not say they are a bad thing. If they also get uninsured and banned drivers off the roads, well....

In West Yorkshire I have seen many by the roadside and one of the local towns has the ANPR software running on its extensive city street cameras.
Local Plod told me all motorway routes in and out of the West Yorkshire are covered too.
I like that.. a lot.

They are rife on Teesside. I regularly see them on the A66. I have also seen some vans with wording on the side to the effect that they were testing for dodgy diesel in Middlesbrough too.

It makes me wonder how effective these DVLA tax cameras are as they always seem to operate on their own without marked police to stop the offending cars. I bet many untaxed cars and the worst offenders without insurance too wont be registered to the correct address anyway.

A fine popping though the letterbox of an unoccupied/derelict house two weeks later is hardly going to stop the untaxed/uninsured hit and run brigade is it?

A350 at Chippenham, in layby opposite Chippenham golf club which is the bottom of the link road to the M4 motorway. Seems to be a very regular spot for DVLA tax camera and/or ANPR team along with a tag team. Theres also a permanent ANPR site on the M4 westbound about 2 miles past junction 17, consists of 3 cameras, once for each lane mounted on a bridge.

Do these cameras always operate with a posse of road-plod ready to pounce? If not, then surely they can only catch cars that are registered to an address?

I suspect its in some of the traffic cars... Apparently there is a good `catch` rate around here and the local rag court list is full of the consequences. I was told there is a crackdown on non standard numberplate`s too.

And so there should be. The only way to get a decent society (which we definitely don't have at the moment) is by having zero tolerance for all misdemeanours.

There was a DVLA ANPR van out here in the "wilds" last Wednesday Afternoon, White Transit covered in Green DVLA logo's, "shop a dodger" messages and covert phone nos. It also had what "appeared" to be four cameras mounted on each corner of the roof, two forward and two rear facing.
Method of operation seemed to be: driving slowly along every street in town, and every so often it would stop opposite a parked car, and a Green-hi-vis clad operator would jump out and stick a "ticket" on car windscreen.
Needless to say, word must have spread, because in the next half-hour, the local Rugby club car park (private ground? ) was full!! and that has never been seen before in the last 20 years!!.
