Temporary Insurance for foreign visitor.

Temporary Insurance for foreign visitor. - yorkiebar
OK, I have a car i am lending to 2 people (friends of friends) for 6 months while they are over here working for the summer.

I cant and don't want to add them to my insurance (trade policy and very expensive to add names; let alone any increase if they were to have an accident)

I do have a couple of cars I am willing to let them use (not too worried about what state I get them back in).

Any ideas on best way to arrange insurance for them? Including, should I register the car int their name etc?

All helpful opinions welcome and other opinions wont hurt!

A broker is the only real route to follow - you will need all the details ofd their ages, history etc and it will be expensive even if they are of a "sensible age"

All the big names and the Direct insurers will probably not offer cover

I asked this question on behalf of a friend a couple of years ago and there was one company which did it no problem - job done. Memory is vague but it was one of the biggies and I'm pretty sure it was Norwich Union. 97% sure.

My friend was Polish and in his early thirties and as I recall didn't need to prove history and NCB or wotnot. I could be mistaken but I remember being pleasantly surprised by how smoothly it went. Got a good quote on a 2001 Passat and went with it. I remember because I did it for him and keep getting reminders to my email address.

A few years ago we sold my wife's car to a young lad who was here from New Zealand with his girlfriend. He was related to the guy who owned the independent garage we used for servicing. They were planning to "do" Europe for six months by car and our old banger with a fresh service and a years MOT was ideal for them. Can't remember who provided the insurance but he reckoned it was easily sorted out by visiting a high street broker. He paid us £250 for a rather dishevelled but remarkably reliable Panda and we later discovered to our relief that the old car had safely completed the trip and had been sold on again to another UK based NZ friend of his.

Not exactly the same thing, but there are holiday house swop type arrangements where US/UK swoppers use each other cars and insurance (which I'm making the bold assumption was sorted out properly) is never highlighted as being an issue.

I put a visitor on my policy for a week a few years ago. I just rang the insurance company, gave her name and age, and it cost £10. No other details were needed.

I faced exactly the same scenario for a visitor, and indeed posted a similar question on here. My BiL has had an aussie licence for 30+ years, and we intended lending him a spare 106 diesel kicking around in the family. I tried everything - brokers, internet searches, NU as mentioned above and drew a blank on all of them. I spoke to NU and they said that they could not offer a policy to somebody with an australian licence and much the same problem elsewhere. In the end I pushed it back to my BiL and said that if he could arrange insurance he was welcome to use the car. I have not heard that he has yet but will speak to him soon on the matter. On a previous visit I added him to my insurance as a named driver for all of £16.50 but like the OP do not wish to do this on thsi visit.

Bit strange, because I knew Norwich Union and Endsleigh do insure people with foreign licenses (as long as that is valid for driving in UK - usually 1-yr from their first arrival in UK)

It is easy to find "temporary short term cover car insurance foreign visitor driver" (just use your favourite search engine).
The difficulty is that these are mainly for adding temporary foreign drivers to an exisitng policy. To have their own policy, they usually need to have a car which is "owned" and/or named as "registered keeper".

Oh no it isn't - unless it's someone with an EU licence in which case it's a doddle (we have some things to thank the EU cross-border trading rules for!). But for a USA visitor it seems nigh on impossible.
I two visitors of mature (well, mid 30s) years coming over for Xmas and I can't find anyone who will touch them.

well one suggestion is perhaps to look in those magazines that are available to Australians/ex pats here at tube stations. think one was called TNT and imagine they have adverts for insurers or brokers. might have an online version.

These short term insurance deals will be limited to 28 days for one particular car within a 12 month period I believe. But if the OP could swap the car for them 6 times this might work. Not the cheapest solution though.

I think HJ and his employer do not mind linkd to the employer, it the Murdoch lot that they don't like.

OP posted 20 months ago, and also has not visited the backroom since April this year!

and the t&c of dayinsure says:
"Car Insurance Criteria - Do you qualify for our short term insurance?
You must: hold a current, valid, full UK driving licence, and have done so for at least 12 months "

From the replies it's obviously still an issue!
A crew called Hertford advertise insurance for Aus & US licence holders, and originally said they would cover, but a couple of weeks later when rellies arrived they'd changed their minds. Possibly they will still do Aus licences, but they said their underwriters had had so many claims from US licence holders theat they had stopped.
I eventually got cover from duinsure.com (down under insurance) but had to transfer my spare car into her name for the duration - sent forms off to DVLC etc. Couldn't find any other way - tried a couple of local brokers and got nowhere (might be different in London; I am in rural Wiltshire!)
My US rellies said they weren't surprised - gettihng a US licence is virtually a non-problem, I gather.
