(01-07) 2.2TD - Engine not revving above 2,000rpm - niknak
I am having a problem with my 2.2 turbo diesel X-trail, when the car is moving with the clutch dipped e.g. coasting up to traffic lights, the engine revs stay at 1,000rpm. When the car is stopped the revs dip to 800rpm, more often than not, after this the engine will not rev above 2,00rpm. To rectify this the ignition needs switching off and on again and the fault goes away.
I have had the car into the dealer who changed the fuel filter with no curing of the problem, they said that it could be the fuel pump which would be 2 grand to change (the car is no longer under warranty). Any ideas?

{The 3 separate requests to include year & engine details in the subject header must have been playing hide & seek when you composed your question. Why else wouldn't you have seen them?}

FRom HJ's reports on X-trail - bad bits

Reports of injector and ECU problems on 2.2 136s. Further reports of turbo failures on 136PS 2.2i diesel, possibly because drivers are not letting them spool down by idling the engine for a minute or two from red hot. TSB to replace failing 'Power Boost Sensors' that can also lead to turbo failure.

Reason for engine problems may well be that engine air filters are not routinely changed at services and, of course, on any diesel engine, they need to be. Failure of intercooler common. Large number of turbo, intercooler and general quality problems have led me to withdraw my recommendation of the car.

Another reason for turbo failure is down to the intercooler having compressed connections as opposed to the welded connections now used.

This applies to Renault 1.5DCI engines, but may explain why the diesel turbochargers fail: The EGR valve should open to allow carbon dioxide (which acts as a cooling gas) into the combustion chambers when the engine is under load (>30% boost). This allows the combustion chamber temperature to drop and thus the temperature of the exhaust gases. If it sticks in the closed position the exhaust gas temperature will rise causing a) the turbo bearings to fail and b) engine oil into the induction system. This can cause the engine to run on its crankcase oil until it is either stalled or goes bang. Problems with EGR valves are often the cause of rough running when the valve is stuck in the open position as well. In several cases turbos have blown but the EGR valve has not been replaced. Inevitably the new turbo unit will not last long.

Problem on overrun on EU4 136bhp diesels between 2,000 and 2,400rpm.

Does this apply to the old-style turbo diesels because looking over my service receipts I can't see when an air filter has ever been replaced on my Mazda 323TD (2002 reg)?

I stand corrected - the air filter has indeed been replaced. Didn't recognise its description on the service sheet.

I have a 2003 115 hp X-Trail which has idled fast until the vehicle is at a standstill exactly as described. It has done this from day one up to the present 95000 km. It has always revved and driven perfectly afterwards. I assumed it was a characteristic of the engine set-up, although I've never found out why (to drive the vacuum pump or power steering pump better?)

Sounds like an EGR fault to me you need to get the dealer to read fault codes from the PCM to confirm. The reason the car will not rev above 2000RPM is due to car going into "limp home mode" as the engine management has sensed a fault and it limits what the driver can do to ensure minimal damage.

Hope this helps

Firstly engine rev's are suppposed to hang up untill vehicle stationary, ie 900-1100 rpm
secondly, idle speed will fall once idling
It sounds like it is going into limp mode as has been suggested already preventing from reving & a diagnostic check should reveal this. have you checked tha brake lights making sure they work including correctly with the right bulbs in & the right way round as a brake light fault can prevent the throttle responding!. are you coasting up to lights & left foot braking ?. Some vehicles now go into default mode if you left foot brake whilst driving! It does sound like a possible EGR valve fault but guessing is expensive! a good diagnostic centre will find the cause.

I am a bit concerned about taking it back to the same dealership as they did not detect a fault with the EGR when running it under their diagnostics, wonder why the EGR fault did not show if that is the root cause. I have always used this same dealership when servicing and have been relatively happy so far. They were however telling me that if the warning light hadn't have gone out after the fuel filter change they would then have been looking at replacing the fuel pump, no mention of EGR. What would you recommend?

I have already made my recommendations in the above post's

It may be worth getting your dealer to carry out fuel pressure checks whilst driving & live voltage checks as well. Iether the alternator may be spiking & ECU going into limp mode to protect itself or fuel pressure valve defective. Try using your excisting dealer as they already know the car but discuss with them the fact that your not going to keep paying out for a try this try that scenario. Do have the obvious checked as well.

I had exactly the same problem with my October 2004 2.2dci xtrail, my friend Manages a local garage so tested the fault reader and came up blank. It wasnt until the xtrail went in for an MOT that the problem showed itself again! he was able to "plug in" whilst the problem was there. It showed a fault with the FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR. This was changed with a genuine Nissan part (around £65.00) and the problem has gone away.

Alot cheaper than Nissans £2K pump!!!!

I may have a similar problem. The engine starts okay first thing but once warmed up after a short journey and I shut down the engine and say a couple of minutes later I have problems starting, once its started i dont have any problems. At first i thought it was the diesel i was using from ASDA because when I used shell fuel the problem went away, but now i'm not sure if the underlining problem is the fuel regulator. Do you know if the fuel reg is difficult thing to replace or should a garage do it.. Sorry for bring this issue back up, but any adivise will be very hekpful. thank you.

Hi, I am suffering from the problems you quoted, do you remember the nissan dealers name because my local dealer says F.P.R. is part of the pump and not sold alone.

(No doubt looking for his 2k).

i had the very same problem with my 2.2 dci x-trail. the pump is an expensive part to replace but what the main dealer is not telling you is, there is a swith on the pump that can be replaced as i have done at an expense of €90. however when you replace the switch you will need to go to a nissan garage to put the computer onto the car and set the switch. you can get one of the lads in the nissan garage to set the pump switch before you replace it and see if the problem comes back into it. my x-trail had that problem at 120,000 kms and its running well now at 250,000 since replacing that switch.
