02 2.0TD stuttering/jumping/kangaroo & grey smoke - Tony M
Hi all,

I expect there is an answer in here somewhere, i have looked to save repetition, but could not find it. So here is my problem:
I have an 02 reg Duratorq 2.0 I 16V Diesel engine. 80K on the clock. About 2 weeks ago it started to stutter/jump/kangaroo when accelerating with a light grey smoke out the back when this was happening. No smoke when travelling normally. (Great fun when pulling out of junctions/roundabouts!) No warning lights on the dashboard.
I had the fuel filter changed as i thought it might be a supply issue. Cured it straight away. However the problem has returned in the last 2 days. The Ford dealer in Hove cannot see me until next monday but there is a garage right behind me (who did the filter) who will do the repair but are not able to do diagnostics. Then I found this fab site!

I would be extreemly grateful for any responses, apologies if you are repeating yourselves! If you need any furhter info please let me know.

Many Thanks

Sounds like contaminated fuel, suggest getting the tank drained and refilled and perhaps a second new filter.

If it is that hopefully it has not damaaged the fuel system.

Thanks Cheddar,

Hopefully nothing serious... i can get the tank emptied and pump replaced. I was looking around this site and saw a posting about something similar, they talked about Exaust Gas Recirculating Valve being a problem sticking open? Does this sound plausable?

Plausible though if replacing the fuel filter temporarily solved it then it points to fuel, looking at the filter will show if it is mucked up again.

I would drain the tank and replace the fuel filter (the system must be primed, you cant let the HP pump prime the system, it is not getting lubed while it is sucking air) and then see how it goes.

Cheddar,

Makes sense..... how annoying! the fuel filter is a sealed unit (the garage showed me a new one) so cannot see inside.

I will get it done tomorrow and report. Feedback is always useful for someone else with the same problem in the future.

Thanks for your suggestions, I'm a div when it comes to cars, much better with buildings!

Hi there
Did you manage to cure your problems?
If so, what did you do?

if you cut filter open with a sharp blade not a saw and look at filter material for particles eg dirt metal fileings etc will give you a better idea wots up

Hope this helps, fixed mine with new Eletric Lift Pump Bosch part no. 0580464096
went to Bosch dealer direct www.bosch.co.uk/content/language2/html/index.htm and got it for less than £100. My local ford wanted £454 (part only) for the same part.

This was a fix for my TDDI.

Fault Codes

P0148 Fuel Delivery Error Display By Fuel Injection Pump

P0149 Injection Timing Error Displayed By Fuel Injection Pump

P1564 Injection Pump Control Module Requesting Reduced Fueling

That is if you have the same problem.

would trading standards do a test on your fuel sample? if you had the reciept maybe you could claim against the garage, and maybe others were affected too

I've got exactly the same error codes and the part I've been quoted as needing is the fuel injection pump. The quotes I've been getting are simply phenomenal from £650 +VAT to over £1100!

Could I ask which Bosch dealer you got yours from?

The electric lift pump and fuel injection pump are different components.

The lift pump simply carries the fuel from the tank to the engine bay. The fuel injection pump creates the very high fuel pressure needed for the fuel injection process, and is a much more expensive piece of equipment due to the precision engineering required. Four figures is common.

I've got the same error codes and I'm wondering if you solved your problem. Please tell me it was the lift pump in your case as was shazzie21's solution , as the cost of the injection pump and labour to fit is frightening to say the least!!!!

Shazzie21, thank you very, very much. I had the same problem on my 2.0 TDDI and error codes, (P0148, P0149 and P1564) after already spending £200, the garage didn't know what is was and were going to get me a new main fuel pump. Google gave your answer and I got a lift pump off ebay £100. all sorted now great.

Hi Tony M could you tell me what was the solution to your problem as I have the same problem
02 2.0TD stuttering/jumping/kangaroo & grey smoke - pehu
I have exactly the same problem, I'm going to start with the fuel filter. How to you access error codes?
02 2.0TD stuttering/jumping/kangaroo & grey smoke - davecuk
Sounds as if too much fuel is reaching the engine (grey smoke), so I would check injectors, metering, pump pressure etc..
