What do you do?

[1] if you're on a motorway where next service is probably to long
[2] on A or B road through country side
[3] in town centers

[3] is usually less of a problem as some superstores are always nearby. Only finding a suitable parking is headache.

But what's the best option for [1] or [2]?

{sorry, but that apostrophe in the header finally got to me}

Needs must when the devil drives. Anywhere at a pinch, obviously as discreetly as possible. A ballet dancer I knew in my bohemian youth, a small and compact lady with a large capacity for gin and beer, used to disappear under the nearest parked truck in Chelsea or wherever. Pubs come in useful, although if you feel obliged to reward them for letting you use the bog it's better to have a short than a pint, or the same thing will happen again a few miles later. Bushes and hedges come in useful too. It's a non-problem really. When did you last hear of someone caught short being run in for committing a public nuisance?

Years ago there used to be ads in the Sunday paper for an in-car, erm, urinal thing. Never saw one and never knew of anyone actually buying it. Awful-looking contraption.
Still on sale on the web, so it would appear... www.seemans.com/care/portable_urinal.htm

If it's dangerously affecting your driving ability, your course is clear. Having to have a pee is not an emergency.

[2] on A or B road through country side

Get out and have a pee in the hedge, or use the car & doors as cover.

Have to admit that as a sufferer of the dreaded prostate, I have HAD to pull into a lay-by on numerous occasions and then open the nearside rear & front doors, which gives you good screening from any voyeurs and let nature take its course.!!!!!!

Obviously I accept this would not be possible without a 4 door vehicle.

Might sound daft, but I cannot understand why nobody has done a set of POIs for satnavs for this very purpose, especially as there are fewer public facilities year on year and they get harder to track down.

Nature's call while driving? - pmh
Follow the french example, find the most exposed (pun?) location and just spray it about a bit!

Nobody gets upset in France so what is the problem here?

Nature's call while driving? - movilogo
Do you really need a Sat Nav to tell you where is nearest hedge? :)

During motorway traffic jams, I've seen people committing nuisance over hard shoulder!

Actually for men it isn't a very big problem. But for women it's more acute problem.

I wonder what people do in countries like USA/Canada with astronomical intercity distances.

They must use roadside. Shouldn't be a big problem with sparse locality.

In Scotland/Wales, finding a secluded hedge isn't that difficult. But in SE England, it is so highly populated, that you might find yourself easily embarrassed by passing pedestrians out for dog walk!
Nature's call while driving? - Westpig
I have always had to plan long journeys carefully....and will never get on a coach unless it had a toilet on it....saying "go before you leave home" doesn't show any understanding of the problem, believe me.

the worst i've done is pull onto the police only observation ramp on the M4, when stuck in a really bad jam and aim away from everyone else.

the only plus side to it was my passenger was a most stuck up elder sister of my then girlfriend and the horrified look on her face when i came back was worth all the tea in China

Now this where I need the assistance of a bored lawyer ! But.......there was a rumour many years ago among high mileage drivers that there is such a thing as an old, possibly medieval, unrepealed law called "carters' law" . The gist of it being that as a bona fide traveller (or carter ) that you can legally wee or whatever on your own wheel if necessary on the basis that the wheel will then destroy the.... er....evidence.

Not sure if this has any basis in truth but there you ......go I suppose !

You should be so lucky!

My own method for motorways, before I regularly had passengers (any other situation shouldn't cause any able bodied man the slightest, er, inconvenience..) was to carry (or retain) the inevitable coke or tango can - so I could replace what I drank. It could then be stored in/on any cubby hole/cupholder until arrived & parked.

The obvious caveats applied - wait for easy trafiic conditions, set cruise control, carefully(!)l abutt the nasty ring-top hole to appendage & relax! Wouldn't dream of doing it nowadays, too safety conscious.

My TD MG midget was wont to boil over and, if there was no-one around, I topped it up thus. This involved a tricky perch and a careful aim. For a joke, someone tried this in the petrol tank of a friend's F MG midget. The contents jellified and the tank had to be cut open and steam cleaned. The car was never really the same again.

My brother (a retired police officer), tells the story of an old man seen emptying a small teapot on the street. When challenged,he said he was emptying his tea-pot as the tea had stewed. It was obvious it was not tea,the two officers had to get back to their car, where a good belly laugh ensued. This is probably one of his Grimms Tales, but it`s a good idea nevertheless.

Nature's call while driving? - AlastairW
The only time I ever got badly caught short on the M-way I decanted my sandwiches from a Tupperware box and peed into that. I don't know who blushed more, me or them.

Talk to some military, formal or informal, who have had to do long-range desert stuff.

Someone I know told me a story about driving some sort of captured American 6X6 through endless sand dunes. If you keep lolloping over the surface you're OK, but if you stop or spin the wheels much you may bog down.

They used to do it in situ and hose the vehicle out afterwards (when they came to some water! Otherwise scrubbing with sand, not such fun... perhaps that's when prisoners of war come in useful?)
Nature's call while driving? - Dulwich Estate
"Berlingo, blinds on back windows and a Porta Potti. "

Maybe this explains the new trend of blacked out windows in cars. As the number of public loos diminishes so the number of cars with blacked-out/heavily tinted windows increases.

You can pretty much prove anything with statistics.

Slightly off topic but Kate Adie recounts a story where she was the only female in a camp of 1000 or so male soldiers during the first Gulf War and there were no 'facilities ' for ladies so she decamped into the desert at night complete with shovel .....everyone knew what she was up to.

In her book she describes her embarrassment the next day when it was explained how she had provided much entertainment by performing natures call well within the range of the infra red nightsights used by the soldiers ....
Nature's call while driving? - Lud
Yes, this thing is worse for women than men, obviously.

I was in a plane full of (mainly) journalists in North Africa once, a turboprop thing, not all that big, an old Ilyushin I think. Anyway for some reason the sewage tanks hadn't been emptied and so the lavatories were out of bounds, indeed literally brimming, as we took off for a four or five hour flight against the wind. By contorting oneself somewhat in the small facilities one could pee into the basin, but one particular small, ferocious female Reuter stringer had a frightful time of it, although she did manage. Didn't put her in a very good mood though.

Because it is correct punctuation - signifies the possessive (though Sainsburys and Tescos don't seem to need it
"Putting it into MS word with the apostrophe and it throws a wobbly with the spell checker."

So am I, which is why I changed it for what I thought was the correct spelling.
