1999, 1.1, gearbox noises - rjtyrell
Hi,

I am gonna sell my Saxo in the next 2/3 months. My only problem is that I think the gearbox bearings have gone.

When I lift the clutch I get a rattling noise which goes when I depress the clutch. I have changed the gearbox oil which didn't help.

Basically what is my best option, if I sell it no one will really want it due to the gearbox being on the way out. Are my only other options to get a reconditioned box put in, or I can just change the bearings.

Thanks,

Richard.

Are you sure it's the gearbox bearings?

Sounds simply like the clutch release bearing to me.

It's normal to replace this when you have a new clutch put in, it'll probably be OK until then.

Hi Ron,

I had my clutch replaced approx 6 months ago.

So either they didn't replace the clutch release bearing or its something else.

I will speak to them tomorrow and find out if they replaced it.

If you get a rattle when the clutch is pressed, it's probably the release bearing. In this case, the rattle is when the clutch is released, which is probably caused by the gearbox primary shaft bearing.

I rebuilt a gearbox early last year - release bearing started to sound straight away. Input bearing was on removed box was tight.

Only way to tell either way is to put it on ramps/axle stands, put it in gear, release the clutch then put it back down again. If the sound's still there whilst the wheels are slowing down then it's the gearbox. Difficult to tell otherwise with road noise etc.

As far as I understand it:

Noise evident on depressing clutch pedal:
Reasons:-
Dry, worn or damaged release bearing.
Excessive play between drive plate hub splines and shaft splines.

Noise evident as clutch pedal released:
Reasons:-
Distorted driven plate.
Broken or weak driven plate cushion coil springs.
Release bearing loose on retainer hub.

I hope this is of help.
