1.2 8v - starting problem after waterpump failure - liam.d
hello, i'm liam i only signed up today so i'm new to this forum. i was just wondering if anybody could help i have a vauxhall corsa 1.2i 8v and the water pump snapped and the cam belt fell of as i was goin down the road. I then replaced the cambelt and water pump then tried to start it and took a little while to go then and when it did it sounded like it wasn't firing on all four cylinders so i asked around and was told it was the cat. so i brought a new 1 and fitted it and then tried to start it again but still the same so i took it to a garage but he said the only thing he could think off is the head gaskett. i just wanted to see if anyone else could think of something beforei go spending a load more money on it. any ideas anyone?

Do a compression test. The chances of bent valves after a cam-belt failure is very high on all but the 1.4 engine.

You need better sources of advice.

Or the possibility of a snapped rocker.

would it be visable damage to them? i dont need the car for a while now so i could just buy the head gaskett and attemped it myself with my mate who done it on my nova because it doesn't hurt to change the head gakett or does it?

You're going about this the wrong way round and it's costing you a lot of wasted money.

Diagnosis comes first. Once you know what's wrong, then you can take effective steps to fix it. Otherwise, you just keep fitting parts without fixing it.

As DD says; could be a snapped rocker. So take the rocker cover off and look under the cam for loose bits of rocker. [Do you know the engine code - C12NZ or similar?]

If there's nothing visible - do that compression test.

Are you ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that you got the cam and flywheel marks perfectly aligned when you fitted the cam belt? It is easy to get it a tooth out which will affect the timing and thus cause running as you describe.

this engine is generally known as a safe engine,(ie dont bend valves when the belt breaks) first thing is to recheck that the timming is spot on then and only then progress any further

do you mean cam belt or alternator belt

you state in your first post that you replaced the cam belt and water pump so the answer is the cambelt , fan belt has no connection with the engine timing

Haynes manual will help if you have no idea, or take it to your local indie..

i have a 1.4 corsa and supposedly when cam belt goes it cannot damage the valves, but it can. my cam belt snapped due to water pump and i tried to start it up twice only to find out from the garage that after all repairs it was only firing on 2 cylinders and i had bent two valves.
