The Driving Manual published by the Driving Standards Agency may be what you're referring to although my '92 copy is red with a broad beige stripe down the centre.

Might visit a bookshop on Monday and see if that is it! Good gift for younger drivers.

I believe the book you refer to is/was indeed called simply Driving

Cheers guys. Maybe the ones linked to in this thread are updated versions of that book. The one my parents would have had might have dated to the late 70s or early 80s, but it is rightly described by someone above as a brown fabric type of cover. I will have a look around, but am sure it is gone, and I want to make sure which one it is before I buy a new copy.

IMO such books don't mean you can do without the HC. You should always ensure you have the latest one because stuff changes.
Must remember to follow my own advice some time...
