Highway code or other books? - franco
I am about to buy the highway code and have seen that it is 132 pages, but I recall that a much thicker book belonged to my parents many years ago that seemed to be a lot more detailed and covered many different situations and potential dangers of each manoeuvre in detail - does any similar book exist now? I don't know if the one I'm thinking of was a Department of Transport book, but it had a brown cover and I'm sure it was not the official highway code book.

Sounds like Roadcraft - type of advanced driving book used by emergency services/advanced drivers - a good read. Good idea to keep up dated copy of Highway Code (mine is in door pocket) and very useful when a passenger argues use of signals on a roundabout or similar - keep them occupied checking that you are right rather than 'back seat driving'!

Yeah, I know the one you mean. I may have a copy at home, but won't be there for maybe a week.

No it wasn't Roadcraft. I can picture the blooming thing now !

Was it just called 'Driving' ? I seem to remember having a brown book of that name when I learned (long long ago!! lol)

Yep that's the one, sort of soft (not paper though) cover A5 size and pretty thick.

I wonder ?

Sounds about right - my copy sadly went long ago (borrowed and not returned together with some really good, basic RAC books on how the engine worked) - sort of bonded fabric cover.

Might visit a bookshop on Monday and see if that is it! Good gift for younger drivers.

The Driving Manual published by the Driving Standards Agency may be what you're referring to although my '92 copy is red with a broad beige stripe down the centre.

Book?...... driving?........ youth? Surdo fabulam narras, as they say.

I believe the book you refer to is/was indeed called simply Driving

Cheers guys. Maybe the ones linked to in this thread are updated versions of that book. The one my parents would have had might have dated to the late 70s or early 80s, but it is rightly described by someone above as a brown fabric type of cover. I will have a look around, but am sure it is gone, and I want to make sure which one it is before I buy a new copy.

IMO such books don't mean you can do without the HC. You should always ensure you have the latest one because stuff changes.

Must remember to follow my own advice some time...

A search for 'driving' on Amazon brings it up as the 5th item

If you need to replace long-lost books that are now out of print (or like me, you just enjoy old books) try these folks:

biblion.co.uk/

You can often find unusual stuff very cheap. I've used them a few times and the service is very good.

Anyone still running an Austin A40?

This is the book

It's the Department of Transport Manual of Driving.

I think it makes sense to get the newer Driving Standards Agency book, which is about 40 pages longer. Hopefully it is better than the old one and not worse.
