95TD Heater blower intermittent electrical problem - ib33
Hi,
I have a 1995 Xantia turbo diesel which has a strange electrical fault with the heater blower.
If I turn the ignition to the dash lights come on the heater blower always works, as soon as I start the engine it stops. If I switch off/on quickly it usually comes on but can go off again. Sometimes it will restart on a journey but rarely.
Has any one else had the same problem? Any ideas or checks to make would be very gratefully received.
Merry Christmas, Ian

Failing auxiliary contacts in the ignition switch? The heater etc. is cut off when cranking to maximize power to the starter - maybe it doesn't come back on?

Is fuse 20 live when the heater isn't working?

Failure of the ignition switch is well known on the Xantia - causing the blower and heated rear window to stop working. It's fairly easy to fit a relay to take the load off the switch - wiring diagram with instructions can downloaded from here: www.geocities.com/tricky992002/fanmod.xls

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

Thanks for the info, Regards Ian

My old Xantia Heater was very temperamental and there is a connection block under the glovebox that can be a problem too. The ignition switch theory would make sense as my blower would start while you were driving and stop again, completely at random!

I have the same problem as described with a heater fan and rear windscreen demister that doesn't work along with a slightly smokey vent. As I am not too au fait with installing a relay, is changing the ignition switch an easy job? I may also have a look at the matrix another day when I get a spare 10 hours!

Installing a switch is not for the uninitiated; take it to an autosparks for diagnosis and repair.

hi

had thesame issue with my xantia, my electrician new exactly what the fault was, the wiring loom connects via a block in the driverside foot well under the carpet right against the door, he moved the carpet to show me and the connections were burt, apparently they get damp and short out causing both fan issues and rear window problems, he replaced the connector and checked the wires for £25.00. never had a problem since, fan works great on all settings.

common fault he said. so maybe worth a look
