2.2 D4D< High tickover when cold - GandA
I have recently bought a 2.2 D4D-X Avensis diesel which has developed what I think is a problem. On recent cold mornings the tick over speed has increased from the usual 800rpm to 1200 rpm. It settles down again to 800 rpm after about 5 miles, or 10 - 15 minutes. I am new to diesels but am surprised that the tick over is so high for so long. On warmer days it starts and stays at 800rpm. I have had it back to the dealer and they assure me that this is perfectly normal as diesels do take a long time to warm up. Are any other owners seeing the same symptoms? Do I have a problem or am I fussing about nothing?

My peugeot 1.9 TD does it

My old Jeep 3.0 CRD did it

My Chrysler 300c 3.0 CRD does it

In all cases they do it/did it for about 5 mins or so, but that includes a duel carriage way run for the start f my morning journey. Yours will of course depend on what your initial journey is like when cold.

My Passat diesel does not do it. Would be very inconvenient creeping along in traffic if it did. Maybe another Avensis owner can answer usefully?

My Avensis 2.0 D4D does it, 1200 rpm until it warms up then drops to 800 rpm.
Nothing to worry about.

Thanks to everyone for their feedback. I'm told that the newer breed of lean burn diesel engines auto advance the fuel injection when cold and this causes the engine to run that much faster. It doesn't cause any significant increase in fuel consumption. I guess it's just something else that I need to get used to after years of driving petrol vehicles. Thanks again.

My wife has had three petrol Yaris and all have done as the OP describes, a high initial idle speed of about 1400rpm and then a reduction to 600. This seems a feature of modern electronic engine management systems.

I have not noticed that my Mondeo TDCi does this - perhaps it is manufacturer related.

Not a diesel, my '90s Kia Pride ticks over at 2400 peak in cold weather before dropping back to 800 odd. I'm reluctant to investigate, because otherwise everything's fine.

If you switch off the heater/aircon/climate control/whatever you want to call it, the car will idle at 1000 revs instead of 1200. Mine is 2.0 D4-D and I noticed this on a cold morning in Jan.

my astra (petrol) does it about 1200 when cold then settles down when it gets warmed up. Both of my Laguna's did it as did my old cavalier (all fuel injection) a little strange when your in traffic as it seems as if the car is a little keen to get moving when you creep forward lol
