the two pipes (metal?) might be the a/c pipes.

Your engine temp is low - I would start by replacing the thermostat. At the same time flush the radiator and also check the function of the radiator fans. I think there are two one a viscous fan one normal.

the viscous fan is the large plastic fan just behind the radiator. It generally turns over slowly until the engine temperature rises to the hot zone (not sure what the temperature is where it engages) when it will kick in as the viscous coupling engages. Check it's not running hard all of the time as this will over cool the engine...also check the thermostat. Just a final note. Make sure that you have adequate anti freeze (red) as it also acts as an inhibitor against rust & other gunk. A friend of mine has an A4 1.8T which had a rad leak...he kept topping up with water and a few months later the heater matrix was shot and had to be replaced at a cost of around £500! If your heater is intermittent try flushing it, if you have A/C it should be icy cold, if not it may need gassing or other parts. An aircon specialist is a better bet than a main dealer for this sort of repair

I would first replace the thermostat and flush the system. Then come back and tell us whats happening.
