VW Passat (Should I Change) - bhoy wonder
Should I replace my passat 54 plate 130bhp 24000 miles. I have had issues with notchy gears on the car for about 8 months. In the 8 months the garage has upgraded the oil in the gearbox, changed the gearbox and finally changed the dual mass flywheel and replaced the clutch. All under warranty thankfully. The car seems fine now and I like the car but I have lost confidence in the car I am just waiting for something else to go wrong. The warranty is not up until end of November. Should I keep the car until then and see if I get my confidence back in the car or should I get rid of the car ASAP.

Any comments are greatly appreciated.

If everything else has gone ok on it why not extend the maker's warranty for 12 months and see what happens.

It sounds like it had one problem, thats taken a while to diagnose, and changing the DMF/clutch has fixed it.

If everything else is ok, and you like it, then why not keep it?
Its all down to finances of course, whats your car worth, whats the price of a newer car, ie whats the cost to change and can you afford it.

If any subsequent problems turn out to be recurrences of things that first occurred during the warranty period, you should be able to get them fixed anyway. We had two Skoda dealers and Skoda UK working on our Fabia's cooling foibles well into its fifth year.

I was thinking about this and it would cost £420 for the year which looks like it covers all components apart from the usual wear and tear parts. I think the price is a bit steep but then again when you think whats been replaced it is a small price to pay. Although these parts should not have failed on a 2 1/2 year old car in the first place.

TVM,

I no issues with the garage they have been great. The problem was intermittent and would come and go to the point where I thought it was me.

I was passing Motorpoint the other week and was looking at the mondeo 2.0l petrol titanium. They offered £8400 for my passat highline plus £1100 cash. Although if I was going to change I think I would want the titanium X

You want to change your car don't you ? ;-)

At 24k it's barely run in, and you have taken a big chunk of depreciation. Take the warranty, and RAC cover and you should be OK for a while. Can you get two years cover?

Good advice, and no reason to think that other things will go wrong, it should give you another 150k miles no problem. Though there are more refined diesels and cars that are more fun to drive than the Passat.

PU, you have rather changed the context there, my "Good advice .." refered specifically to Local Yokel's comments so saved me from typing out the same points myself.

Sorry Cheddar, I see where you're coming from. Maybe a bit hasty with the knife there. I assume context has been re-gained but your post directly follows Local Yokal's....

Get a price to swap and sit down and do the maths, a low mileage tdi should get a good PX price (push them hard) if it still has some manufacturers warranty left, the garage will have nothing to pay out if problems arrise after they've sold it.

That cover the head bit, what does yoour heart say ;O)

Right I have had a serious think about it and I am going to keep the car and extend the warranty for another year. The only reason I thought about changing was because mondoes are very cheap and it is a lot of car for the money. Anyway I promised myself I would never buy a ford again after the problems I had with a year old orion and the dealer back in 1990 and so far I have not done so.

I promised myself I would never buy another VW after the unbelievable problems I had with a Sharan back in 1997.

Earlier this year I bought a VW T5 (fingers still crossed ... )

my 04 passatt 130 TDI highline has just turned 50K in 3 years, nothing gone wrong at all, looks brand new. should I change it or keep it... Keep........

Definately keep it. These are solid cars, and it seems as though you have had everything possible done to rectify the fault.
I have had 2 Passats and amd on my second A4 which is mechanically similar.
All of these gearboxes tend towards notchiness when cold. Even my B7 A4 is notchy when cold, but okay when warmed up a bit.
I'm surprised a different oil in the gearbox didn't help the problem. Apart from this minor annoyance, I haven't had any other eral problems with any of these cars. Despite what the VaG bashing fraternity will tell you !

Yes I agree there does seem to be a lot of VW bashers on the site. I can only praise the garage that I use is very professional, not once did they try to palm me off. Always offered a courtesy car when the car was booked in to be checked. This garage is family owned and I hope it stays like this.

There is a saying in IT professional's field - the number of bugs hidden is proportional to number of bugs discovered so far.

I myself never owned any VW but two of my colleagues do own Passats and they all suffered (in fact suffering) with niggling faults - like overheating/coolant loss, parking brake, exhaust problems etc.
