Funny experience on the way home.... - Chris White
Just thought I'd share this one,

Coming home about 21:30 last night, single carriageway road, national speed limit, I'm driving along with 2 cars in front of me and we're doing around 50mph. We're on a straight that extends in front of me for some distance, so I'm thinking I'll overtake but I'll wait until the car coming towards me has passed because it looks a bit tight and not really worth the risk.

But then, seemingly, from out of nowhere a newish BMW 3-series comes up behind me, with only his side lights and front fogs on (no dipped beam at 21:30....), hovers on the centre line for a second and decides to risk overtaking 3 cars getting back onto the correct side of the road by the thinnest of margins.

I then overtake where I was going to and catch him up at the next queue of cars (again going about 50mph).

But then funny thing is, after about 2 miles the road goes into a 70mph dual carriageway and when we reach this, the BMW driver sits in the inside lane doing about 60mph.

I just find it strange that some people will risk lives on the road for nothing and there's no real urgency to get anywhere.

he was probably on the phone by the time you got to the dual carriageway

Sounds normal behaviour for a BMW 3 series.

Perhaps thought you were Plod and wanted you to go past before deciding what to do - but the phone idea sounds more likely!

I imagine he wanted you to pass him so that he could have the pleasure of hussling you out of the way when the road narrowed again...

Gotta get your kicks where you can and all that.

Probably not as much fun driving fast on a dual carriageway. Sounds like a lunatic however with no proper lighting to boot.

Say its most likely to be the phone. Time and time again you see them on the motorway, suddenly pulling into inside lane cos the phone has went, or another common occurence is you will see their brake lights coming on for no reason.

These are the same drivers who will claim the phone isn't a distraction to them....

There are an awful lot of people that come rocketing past you and then 10m. up the road you pass them cruising quite slowly.

I've seen this many times and I think it's a speed limit thing - people take the most outrageous risks to overtake, but then sit rigidly at the limit.

I used to drive a lot in N Wales and this was very common occurrence on the twisty single carriageway A roads. I?ve been unwilling to try to keep up with some overtakers as they fly around blind bends, only to catch them on the next straight bit doing 70. Of course, if caught, I would get done for exceeding the speed limit, they would get off as dangerous driving is much harder to prove.

The BMW was probably going at 60 because many drivers think the dual carriageway limit is 60 - there's one near me that has a speed camera and most drivers slow to 60 for it.

Anyone who has ever tried to make progress in low-powered cars knows all about these people who effortlessly accelerate away at the lights and then dawdle down the road well below the speed limit. They also brake down hills and then accelerate up the opposite slope. Causes wear on cars and nervous systems and burns fuel, but they don't know or care.

The opposite point of view on this: I have a car that handles great and can overtake someone dawdling at 45 or 50 in a national speed limit very easily. In fact I often do this when it's safe to do so. I then take the corners at the same speed if it's safe to do so and there is no limit posted. This is also legal and I believe safe.

However what often happens is I'll have overtaken a number of drivers unable or unwilling to drive at the speed limit on the twisty bits but as soon as we come to a dual carriageway they'll eventually manage to muster enough speed up to come past me well in excess of 80mph. I then have to repeat the process of getting back past these mobile road blocks when we return to the bendy bits.

Mostly I don't care and just regard it as more of a chance to practice safe overtaking but I'm sure that some of these numpties (the ones that flash their lights and give the old Gareth Hunt) think I'm somehow trying to wind them up.

In case there are some of them here- I'm not, what I'm doing is making safe progress, within the law in a high performance car. Maybe, just maybe you should try sticking to the law yourselves before getting all upset that I had the temerity to overtake you.

Yea does sound normal for a bmw / 3 series driver : Its all about ego.... i am able to overtake you slow people and i want to show off how macho my car is, just like me.

I like the overtake but to do it on purpose and to do it when theres traffic ahead is pretty stupid and is only done to show off.

>many drivers think the dual carriageway limit is 60

Very true, and most have never been behind the wheel of a two ton van.

Agree with Markosoft..
There is a contingent of Drivers who like to bate, annoy and taunt others with their driving.
They make everyone else nervous.....However I have seen one of these guys take on "seriously
psychotic white van driver", which ended up after several F1 type overtaking manouervres with
old plastic bottles and wrappers being thrown from white van at the taunter.
Just be reassured one day they will slip up and get spotted by the police and end up as fodder on Police camera action...

I find it interesting when you got on one of those very wide roads which has space for about 1 and a half cars each side but it's marked as a single lane each way. Overtaking is reasonably easy on these and it's funny how everyone wants to overtake everyone just because they can. And then you get someone overtaking someone else who is already overtaking....

And is the continual 3 series stereotyping really necessary ? [yawn, yawn]

Course it is UncleR, wouldn't have warranted a mention unless it was a 3 series, a newish one too!

Another typical BMW driver ;)

This one's better and goes to show the superiority of decent petrol engines over diesels. Far more reckless and dangerous not to mention higher speeds..............not to mention better engine noise..........

The RS4 seems to have considerably more grunt than the M5. Amazing accelaration.
Funny experience on the way home.... - OldHand
Having read the original post that came with that video eons ago I seem to remember that the RS4 was modified and putting out well over 500bhp.
Does make the E39 look rather tardy though doesn't it? That's one of the reasons the B5 is still so popular the 2.7 Bi-Turbo can make 420bhp just from a software change. One so equipped will outperform my B7.

i have owned 3 since i started driving (22 now, age/experience comments in the post).

not all BMW drivers are bad.. just the majority :P i use my indicators and only pass when its safe, also hate those that overtake so tightly they just about clip wingmirrors.
