Leaking Oil - Escort 1.4 1998 - Mike St Helens
Hello again.. I cant shift this pesky oil leak.

I was advised that the leak may be the crank oil seal.. so I popped off to the factors for one...

Right , i got the part from the factors.. was looking at it and its a tiny seal really.. the one that seems to be leaking is the bigger seal, the one right next to the wheel.. I think its called the crank, it is the bottom pulley wheel on the cam belt.. right next to the sump. its this that seems to be leaking oil.. any ideas ?

Im sorry to keep mithering... A garage would charge me a small fortune.. I aint got it.

I did change the back box today all by myself which im dead pleased with, and sorted the handbrake out !

You will have to remove your timing belt and TB rear cover to get a good look at where it is leaking from. Then you will have to change it once identified.

I am not familiar with your engine, but it may be the oil pump gasket. It may be the crank oil seal. Not sure what you are saying, that they have supplied you with the wrong part? If so, go back and ask them to double check it is the crankshaft oil seal - timing belt end.

Until you remove your timing belt and sprockets and rear TB covers you will not know for sure if it is the right one or indeed if that is where the leak is.

The seal they showed me was about an inch in diameter... The one i need is about 3 inches ?

1 inch internal diameter, 1.75 inch external diameter - I would have thought.

You'll have to take the old one out to compare, and take it to the shop.

I always use a bearing specialist having got the old one out! Much cheaper!

Hi ,I suspect your escort has the PTE engine rather than the CVH very simular but the PTE has a black rocker cover. they are notorios for failing C V V's Crankcase ventalation valve its black & mounted on the back of the rocker cover with about three pipes connected. Always worth checking. if its prone to stalling its the valve . about £14 from ford. if the valves are blocked they build up excessive crankcase pressure & force the oil out everywhere
