Where would I start looking for one ? Not looking for a project although I don't mind maintenance, but I want something I can just get in and drive.

I've always fancied one, a recent topic reminded me of one, and at least I won't have to worry about BBD nicking it to sell drugs from like he does with the Merc. 8< Snip - some non motoring comments removed - DD

"CV ragtop? Look for a "Bamboo", a fairly late model in a tasteful shade of green with a stripy green and white roof. Tend to be well looked after as a rule. Where to look? Autotrader only has one listed nationally and it has pink butterflies all over it. Now I'm an open minded sort of bloke, but I really, really don't see you as a pink butterfly sort of guy.

Try www.frome-2cv.co.uk/newsite/aboutusblue.htm as a starting point for something slightly less pink.

...... and once you pick yourself up off the floor at the prices, race over to Autotrader and buy the £500 one with the butterflies and spend a few hundred on getting it through the MOT and allocate half an hour to removing the butterfly stickers.

As for pink butterflies - I'm not stressed by that as this is not the most macho household around - I live with a wife, two girls and the dogs 8< Snip - some non motoring comments removed - DD

This idea could get canned pretty quickly - I had fancied one of those green and cream ones, but I most certainly am not payng those sorts of prices.

Granted, £7,500 seems a little excessive for a lawnmower engine, some deckchair canvas and a few sheets of tin. Hopelessly optimistic is also a phrase that comes to mind. Despite this, the business in question seems to be thriving which can only lead me to conclude that the world has indeed gone made.

You'll get almost all of it back though and these cars are really good fun if you don't mind being a mobile crumple zone.

That's as maybe, and attractive, but that's till an awful lot of money for something which will sit on the drive most for the time.

Crazy money. You can pick 2CV's up in France for a few hundred pounds. I recently was offered one for £400 equivalent, almost fully restored, new chassis. Basically just needed a few cosmetic jobs to finish it off.

Do not consider one of these unless the chassis has been replaced - they rot with unrivalled speed.

Quite appealing in their way but the crash protection of a child's pram.

Good luck with the hunt. Remember that the 2CV was the least developed of the 2CV, Dyane, Ami group of cars and I've owned examples of each. I'd recommend a Dyane if you absolutely must have wind in what remains of your hair :-x

You might get a model with door pockets if you have the patience and the Dyane's sliding windows are more civilised than the transparent letterbox you get in the 2CV. The Dyane and Ami also had the carb. fed with air from the cooling fan giving negligibly supercharged performance.

Whatever you get, do give us all a laugh by letting us know how you get on.

PS I'm going to France in a fortnight; if I see one by the roadside "a vendre", I'll post here.

You will find that there is a stage of hairloss where the plural becomes more appropriate; as in "...wind in my hairs....".

C'mon guys they are no more dangerous than a motorbike....oh thats right they have no power they are more dangerous. I had one at Uni, god it was fun! I remember coming around a corner with the doorhandles dragging on the road, 6 mates standing up in the back, and nearly flattening a bishop. Luckily he laughed.

One day the master brake cylinder broke, I took it to a garage and they indicated that it wasn't roadworthy so I sold it for twice what I paid - £150!

A Mehari looks even more fun, and dont forget the vents open for aircon in the front through the bulkhead.

Heh - I'd rather be thrown clear of a motorbike than trapped in the mangled wreckage of a 2cv.

That said... for pootling round in the summer a 2cv would be fun. It'd have to be a battered old one that I could afford to ruin though. But they seem to be a commodity in themselves these days. 7500 quid? I'll have a modern convertible instead thanks.

Why not get a C15 van? They're more or less the same technology, much cheaper, and a few decades newer ;-)

2CVs aren't all that lethal. Friend who had one years ago had a head-on at the bottom of Cleeve Hill in Gloucestershire - I imagine he'd wound it up to 75 or 80, his foot was permanently on the metal - with a Ford Consul if I remember correctly. The Citroen looked like a fly on a windscreen afterwards, nose well flattened, but he was all right and I imagine the other driver too. Still, he was alone in the car at the time, no rear seat passengers ramming him up against the steering column (one of those tubular steel steering wheels the early 2CVs had).

Not that one would particularly want to have a crash in anything, especially with an airbag mashing your stogie up your nose...

2CVs suit a gentle, rhythmic driving style, mature so to speak. They respond badly to 'sporting' treatment and aren't all that economical driven with a very heavy foot. Pity I had mine, and my Dyane, long before I was capable of driving properly. It's something that only comes with age (with some people anyway).
2CV rag top - this year's toy - Lud
Oh and, typically Citroen at its traditional best, you could get them with a centrifugal clutch that was a boon in traffic, indeed Citroen called it a traffic clutch. It disengaged at idle speed, so you just put the car in first and press the loud pedal when it's time to go. Once engine was spinning, that clutch stayed engaged all the time, and you used the conventional one in series with it for gearchanges. Brilliant, and not expensive.
2CV rag top - this year's toy - Lud
Sorry to go on and on, but I notice that my post two above can be taken to mean my 2CV friend hit another car head-on at 75 or 80mph and survived. Obviously that can't have happened. I imagine there were long black lines leading to the point of impact from both sides...
2CV rag top - this year's toy - Lud
Because 2CVs were equipped with the sort of powerful brakes they sometimes really needed...

Charming cars. I had three. First best - 425cc and a motorcycle speedo. 0-60 in about two weeks. I saved wear and tear on the body by taking it off - doors, bonnet and boot lid slid off and the roof only needed two screws and the elastic band removing (not legal to run it like this in the UK). Last one had alloy head so soft the plugs would blow out. Compression so low they could be put back finger tight. Plug leads draped over chassis members shorted in damp weather: some kind of spiral plastic thingy could be round to them to keep them off.

2CV rag top - this year's toy - Dyane 6 Mehari
There's a Mehari on eBay at the moment. I've not had one for a few years but crikey I'd love another.

Same engine as the Dyane but a lower ratio gearbox and brick style aerodynamics - good for almost 60MPH with a following wind. Only 100 in the UK too, which probably makes it about as rare as the C6 I had for a few days last week.

A replacement galvanised chasis for an A-series is nice but it's not essential - if it's been treated with waxoyl or whatever and inspected and looked after they can escape rot.

My two recommendations are to fit electronic ignition - there are a couple of 2CV specific options - and lose the oil soaked cardboard tubes that connect the heater vents to the hot bit. The latter tip offers the twin advantages of removing a major cause of fires and greatly reducing your chances of carbon monoxide poisoning.

If you intend transporting anyone in the back then I feel sorry for them comfort wise, especially the one in the middle.

A teacher (so going back 20 years) had the Bamboo I think. And he had to take some of us pupils somewhere and the rear "bench" was a metal frame with thin foam. Under the middle seat (mine it happens) had part of the metal frame directly under the thin foam. So imagine sitting on a metal bar length wise with nothing appart from 5mm foam making it comfortable - which it was not!

Sure they can be fun though... but not cheap it seems.

Many years ago I saw the result of a collision between a Citroen 2CV and a Vauxhall Victor. It was only an urban bump and I doubt if anyone was hurt, but just about every panel of the 2CV was displaced and the whole car twisted, while the Vauxhall looked like it had a broken headlight!

Front seats are the same! But very comfortable, despite zero adjustment in any plane.

Lumenition and a new coil transformed my 2cv but I never had any trouble with the tubes-how did you manage to get yours oil-soaked?mine were still OK at 100,000m.+ -I have seen clear plastic used. The only way you can get CO into the heater system(which like the ventilation is very effective) is if there is a hole in the exhaust where it goes thro' the heat exchanger and I have never seen that happen-that part of the exhaust is of very thick tube.At least Citroen pipes are-there may well be some grotty pattern pipes.

Yes.one of the most comfortable car seats I have sat in,a metal frame with the seat suspended by thick rubber bands.they could be unhooked and removed for picnic seating.I had the van,it was fantastic over the rough track to where I lived at the time, not so good through standing water which would enter the points and kill it,used to reverse through floods.

Assembled, yes. Actually the ugly but practical large boot for the Light 15 was a Slough design. Nothing to be proud of in my opinion.
