For my sins I've bought a really cheap 05 Hyundai Elantra turbo diesel from a salvage auction. The car has no keys and no key fobs. The doors are unlocked so can gain entry to the fuse box and engine bay etc etc. What do I try first? Try the main dealer who'll probably take my eyes out with the replacement bits, or source second hand bits and get the dealer to reprogramme the fob? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I would have thought a trip to the Hyundai dealer first to see what the 'official' answer is and how much it would cost. Then investigate other alternatives, although I can't imagine secondhand bits come up that frequently - not the most popular car on our roads is it!
Out of interest, how really cheap was it?

Ok a trip to the dealer it is.
I wanted a cheap diesel to run around in, seems to fit the bill if everything works and the engine is sound. Fingers crossed. I'm fully expecting to throw a few hundred quid at it to get it running around Just hope the engines not sucked some water in from a flood etc. Hopefully its just been Stolen recovered without the keys. Dont fully know the crack till next Tuesday when the cars delivered. I paid £1400. +vat Delivery etc. £1847 total. I've seen 2005 05' plate £5k. So worth a gamble I think. Thanks for the advice.

Mickjo you are a brave man to buy a lump of salvage and dont know the reason for its demise
Lets hope it was stolen and the keys thrown and nothing else
Happened to a friend of mine a few weeks ago ,the thieves threw the keys to all the cars in a big puddle after they had ransacked all his cars
Back to your problem,try more than one hyundai dealer some of them can knock spots of dick turpin,
Not sure if they can code from the manufacturers data though?
Consider a breaker on the internet for your keys and appropiate brains if dealer comes up silly
Ball park dealer figure to sort you £100/£150 you delivering car to him on trailer to scan and sort

Went to the dealership, Seafield Motors in Inverness, the service chappie was superb, expensive £60/hour but worth it. They got a new key cut from the VIN number, (£45 with Vat). I got a Alarm key fob from ebay for £24. 1.5 hours to re-code the key immobiliser and fob (£104 with vat), Appartently recoding a Master key is a longer process as access to a Hyundai computer database is needed for the Pin code for the ECU. Spot On I thought until I drove the car onto the drive way found diesel spilling everywhere, some swine has drilled a 10mm hole in the bottom of the fuel tank and pinched all my diesel. To replace the whole key set for everything brand new is around £650. The ignition switch alone is £261+vat, so I would say I'm lucky with this one. Need to look at how to repair the tank or go for a replacement one any Ideas anyone?
P.S. The rest of the car didn't look too bad body wise but an obvious poor repair to the offside, poor paint job masked over windows etc, spray drift. But It'll do me for a few years I hope,
