New Mondeos & PSA 2.2 twin-turbo diesel - craig-pd130
I was hoping the new Mondeos would be available with the 170bhp twin-turbo 4-pot diesel that's in the Pug 407 & 607, but according to the Ford website, it's not in the launch specs.

Anyone know if the car will definitely get this motor?

I've heard rumours that it will be coming, and (very important from the caravanning point of view), that the maximum towball weight on that model will be raised to 95Kg (instead of the normal 75kg).

Who knows when though!

I believe the autobox, initially at least, will only be available in the detuned 2.0l TDCi I believe. Doesn't appear on their website for the UK but seen prices elsewhere that suggest this.

Here I go replying to myself again.

Whilst the "configurator" online for the Ford website does not let you choose an auto diesel (I think) I just downloaded the brochure. As I thought there is a 2.0 TDCi Auto but with only 130PS instead of 140PS in the manual one. Emmisions for those that are interested rises from the 156g/km for CO2 for the manual 140PS to 189g/km for the auto. That's not bad for an auto diesel is it?

Sounds like they're using the old 130PS Ford diesel with the autobox, which was rubbish in the Mk3.

I'm sure the 2.2 will be along shortly - they will need it to remain competitive against the Passat, Avensis, C5, 407 etc who all offer higer powered diesels.

I'm quietly hoping for a diesel with more than 170PS to replace my ST TDCi, but I don't think they'll put the 2.7 in there, and thats Auto only anyway AFAIK.

does anyone know what the problem was with Ford auto boxes on diesels?

I quite fancy re-newing SWMBO diesel X Type estate, but we want the 2.2 engine with an auto box.......but you can't, because neither the 2.0 or the 2.2 diesel come as autos at present..........rumoured to be available in 2008

must be a reason for it, because this car cries out for an auto box

I reckon it will be a detuned version of the Ford/PSA engine, the objective being to reduce torque for the autobox where as the MkIII 130 is actually more torquey than the MkIV 140, 350Nm v 340Nm.

Likewise Peugeot quote a lower torque output for the twin turbo 2.2 than for the current 2.2 Mondeo / X-Type, 370Nm v 400Nm, however I reckon the spec willl be different when fitted to a Ford.

Ford fit a single turbo detuned version (IIRC 150Bhp) of this engine to the new Freelander and the launch specs of the engine quote both twin turbo and single turbo variant producing 170bhp and 400Nm, I wonder whether Ford will use the single turbo variable vane version in all of their applications, perhaps it suits their preferred catalytic partical filter system better (PSA used an additive system).

I agree that the auto will be a detuned version of the new MIV 140PS engine. Because new both 2.0l diesel engines have particulate filters to be EuroIV compliant whereas the old Euro IV 130PS engine did not need such a filter.
