Pull away quickly, if the wheels spin and it is not checked by the esp (along with the orange ESP light flickering on the dash) then you do not have ESP.

Or just look for the ESP light coming on at the bulb test before you start the car up.

As per a previous post of mine,

Are you confusing ESP with TC (traction control)?

TC limits wheel spin by cutting engine power, whereas ESP uses the braking system to help bring the car back into line.

No I don't think I am, ESP kicks in on my car when the wheels start to spin. Even when trying to provoke it, the system a great job at checking a spinning wheel as well as pulling the car straight, in fact I would say that an important part of pulling the car into shape again is to stop a spinning wheel spinning.

I used to have a Passat 1.8T Sport. ESP was an option and I did not specify it so no switch. Also drove some PDi Passats that did have ESP and the switch was where the manual says to find it.

So the button is not there because it does not have ESP. It does however have traction control.

What is the age of the Passat? Full ESP, traction control etc only came in as standard from November 2001. ABS was standard IIRC.
My Dec. reg. one had it as an unexpected bonus. Think it was something like an £800 option which I did not want to pay for. Glad I got it.

You can decode what options have been fitted to a VW. Take a look at the sticker in the boot or in the service record. Do a Google search for "VW option codes" and follow an appropriate link.
