Windscreen excess charges - P.Mason {P}
The Christmas Fairy is working overtime..

On Friday the washing machine stopped working (new motherboard at £100 £75 call-out..)

This morning I was washing the car when I noticed a horizontal 250mm. crack 50mm. from the bottom of the windscreen that wasn't there yesterday-(a stone chip at each end) unfortunately within the wiper arc, and the car goes in for its MOT next Tuesday, and my insurance company inform me that the windscreen excess went up from £50 to £75 a week ago...

Can they change the excess mid policy? I'd be a bit peeved at that - it's one of the things I look at when comparing policies at renewal time.

Happy Christmas PG,

The motoring link was,I thought, fairly clear in my post - cracked windscreen?

P.

Perhaps it was the subject header that was misleading. Just a thought.

Maybe, but a clear motoring link none the less. Polo Girl being a bit 'trigger happy' with an edit button maybe?

She'll be along in a moment to comment. I',m happy to reporesent you in any hearing - gratis.

No she won't, she'll be too busy signing up for the US Air Force...

Have you been on the receiving end of PG's stern, disciplinarian approach?

Lucky you.

To continue the original thread - I would agree with another poster - surely they can't tell you that the excess has just changed? You signed a contract agreeing the lower excess.
I'd certainly argue the point with them. We aren't allowed to change the slightest thing about our side of the contract. Maybe if they're allowed to change the excess without agreement, you can just ring them and let them know you've swapped your car for a Ferrari?
motoring link - P.Mason {P}
On the subject of the raised excess - good point, - I certainly haven't had any notification from the company, and I'll certainly contact them ASAP about this. I think it would be fair to let a policyholder continue with the original lower excess until renewal.

I saw the motoring link re your windscreen excess...Maybe you should have put the washing machine aspect of your recent bad luck in the "I have a Question" thread aka central heating repairs.

At the risk of incurring the moderator's wrath, I'd like to comment on your w/m repair charges. Surely at £175 you'd have been better off getting a new machine (unless your machine is a high end Dyson, Miele or similar). My local Tesco's do both Tricity Bendix or Zanussi Electrolux machines for around the £200 mark these days.

Seasons greetings to you all.

The thread was called Merry Christmas, looked to be all about washing machines, and, contrary to what you might believe, I have a life which means I can't sit here all day searching for tenuous links.

I'll go and have another look and happily put things right if I'm wrong.

...oh, and, in future, if you've got an issue with the way the site is moderated, please use the email moderators@honestjohn.co.uk.

I've had a look, and, quick as you all are to criticise the second I do anything slightly suspect, it would appear you're right. I'll have a play and see if I can merge these two threads.

Edit: Fixed, and subject line amended so that it actually relates to what the thread contains. I wont hold my breath waiting for a thank you.

PG,

I hereby blame you for everything that's ever gone wrong anywhere at any time. Including World War II, nuclear proliferation and the time Vickie Turney kissed me when I wasn't looking.

Thanks, PoloGirl. Entirely my fault for putting a misleading title-I was attempting irony..!

Back to the original question. I am pretty sure that they can't change the excess, as any excess is an integral part of the policy agreement and affects the cost of the policy. An increased excess usually leads to a cheaper policy. Just imagine how much money could be saved by insurance companies, if they were allowed to increase the excess on all of their policies during the term of the policy.

I was contacted by Autoglass this morning. In the course of organising the repair, I enquired what the excess payment was.
"£50, sir." So, obviously a mistake at the insurance office when they quoted me £75.
Many thanks for all the input.

Or perhaps because your insurance company only put the price up last week (as per your words right at the start of this thread) maybe Autoglass haven't yet adjusted their prices to reflect the recent change. Don't be surprised if you end up having to pay £75.

Have you visited your insurance company on-line and looked up the T's & C's?

The agreed payment was "£50, sir." Perhaps send an e-mail to Autoglass confirming the conversation that specified the excess payment as "£50, sir."

I can't see how any insurance policy would allow for an increase in the excess during the term of the policy, on either the windscreen replacement or accident repairs. Can anyone confirm my belief, or are we at the mercy of the insurers?

So, what was the excess charge in the end?
motoring link - P.Mason {P}
DD,

I'm getting the new screen fitted on Tuesday morning. I contacted the screen company rep., who confirmed £50.
Haven't been able to get in touch with anyone at my insurance co. over the Christmas period, so I'll stick with the £50 quote and let them fight it out between themselves!
Happy New Year to you all.
