The Christmas Fairy is working overtime..
On Friday the washing machine stopped working (new motherboard at £100 £75 call-out..)
This morning I was washing the car when I noticed a horizontal 250mm. crack 50mm. from the bottom of the windscreen that wasn't there yesterday-(a stone chip at each end) unfortunately within the wiper arc, and the car goes in for its MOT next Tuesday, and my insurance company inform me that the windscreen excess went up from £50 to £75 a week ago...

Can they change the excess mid policy? I'd be a bit peeved at that - it's one of the things I look at when comparing policies at renewal time.

To continue the original thread - I would agree with another poster - surely they can't tell you that the excess has just changed? You signed a contract agreeing the lower excess.
I'd certainly argue the point with them. We aren't allowed to change the slightest thing about our side of the contract. Maybe if they're allowed to change the excess without agreement, you can just ring them and let them know you've swapped your car for a Ferrari?

On the subject of the raised excess - good point, - I certainly haven't had any notification from the company, and I'll certainly contact them ASAP about this. I think it would be fair to let a policyholder continue with the original lower excess until renewal.

I saw the motoring link re your windscreen excess...Maybe you should have put the washing machine aspect of your recent bad luck in the "I have a Question" thread aka central heating repairs.
At the risk of incurring the moderator's wrath, I'd like to comment on your w/m repair charges. Surely at £175 you'd have been better off getting a new machine (unless your machine is a high end Dyson, Miele or similar). My local Tesco's do both Tricity Bendix or Zanussi Electrolux machines for around the £200 mark these days.

The thread was called Merry Christmas, looked to be all about washing machines, and, contrary to what you might believe, I have a life which means I can't sit here all day searching for tenuous links.

Back to the original question. I am pretty sure that they can't change the excess, as any excess is an integral part of the policy agreement and affects the cost of the policy. An increased excess usually leads to a cheaper policy. Just imagine how much money could be saved by insurance companies, if they were allowed to increase the excess on all of their policies during the term of the policy.

I was contacted by Autoglass this morning. In the course of organising the repair, I enquired what the excess payment was.
"£50, sir." So, obviously a mistake at the insurance office when they quoted me £75.

Or perhaps because your insurance company only put the price up last week (as per your words right at the start of this thread) maybe Autoglass haven't yet adjusted their prices to reflect the recent change. Don't be surprised if you end up having to pay £75.

The agreed payment was "£50, sir." Perhaps send an e-mail to Autoglass confirming the conversation that specified the excess payment as "£50, sir."

I can't see how any insurance policy would allow for an increase in the excess during the term of the policy, on either the windscreen replacement or accident repairs. Can anyone confirm my belief, or are we at the mercy of the insurers?

I'm getting the new screen fitted on Tuesday morning. I contacted the screen company rep., who confirmed £50.
Haven't been able to get in touch with anyone at my insurance co. over the Christmas period, so I'll stick with the £50 quote and let them fight it out between themselves!
