Just a warning never to believe anything anyone at the DVLA says on the phone.
One of our vans needed to be re-licensed in September, the anniversary of its first registration. Even though that was then three years after first registration, it did not need an MOT in order to renew the tax.
We were surprised , and asked the DVLA when the first MOT would be due. They said they would notify us. Having heard nothing, I rang them today, and was told they never issue reminders or notifications, and it is up to us to MOT the van on its third anniversary of registration. So it seems we ought to have MOTed it in September even though it did not need an MOT for tax purposes.
Checking the DVLA site it says in one place MOTs are needed 3 years after first registartion, in another place 3 years after the YEAR of first registration.
So we have been using a van for three months without an MOT, thanks to DVLA mis-advice.

Section 47 RTA 88 Cliff is what you want.
....those first registered under the Vehicles Excise and Registration Act 1994 not less than 3 years before that time......
so its date of Registration. (Ignoring exceptions to the rule)
DVLA have no dealings whatsover regarding testing so its no wonder they do not send any reminders out.
You do not need tax to renew a MOT but you do need an MOT to renew Tax.

I'm trying to remember what happened when I renewed the tax on our 3 yr old car, which was 3 in Mid Sept, so of course needed retaxing from 1st Sept.
IIRC when the tax reminder came it didn't have the online DVLA link to renew the ta - nevertheless I tried to log on to renew but it wouldn't let me. I then got the car MOT'd in late Aug and within 24 hrs the system had updated and I was able to renew online.
In the OP's case, I'm suprised he was able to retax the vehicle without the MOT, although my tax reminder (I just dug it out) does state that an MOT is required from 16th Sept, so maybe I could have renewed over the counter before this without the MOT?

If you had been stopped without one, you would probably only have been cautioned and told to get a test done and produce the certificate at a police station within 7 days.
The police are more concerned by a lack of insurance.

My Tax expires end of this year, did it online today, how easy was that, but also scarying at how all these databases are now talking to each other, never had to quote any refs for MOT or insurance, it simple said all was in order and I should recieve the disc next week.

Like it has been said the DVLA have very little to do with the MOT, you should have contacted VOSA instead. I thought everyone knew never to believe what the DVLA tell you anyway.

That's exactly the case. We retaxed the van without an MOT, but then were left wondering when it would actually fall due.
Fortunately we have got away with it, and have it booked for testing on 3 January.

In that case, I think the car is legal until midnight of the 25th but would be illegal from midnight onwards. So in effect the MOT test would be required on the 25th unless you know of a 24 hour MOT garage.
