Im looking to replace my Michelin 245/45 R17 95W tyres on my MB320 CDI. Thye current tyres are good however I would like something a little quiter. I know the Dunlops SPSport 01is meant to be good. Can anyone offer any advice? Any good web sites for tyre buying. I need 4 tyres and the Dunlops are around £140 each!!

Harder tyres (with a high treadwear rating) will be quieter, as will fuelsaver tyres which have a lower rolling resistance.
I had a company car that the leasing company put Firestone F580 Fuelsaver tyres on - they had a treadwear rating of 400, compared to the 180 of the Pirelli's that the car came with. They were noticeably quieter, but wet weather grip was much worse.
I'd be reluctant to switch away from the Michelin's - I've just changed to Michelin Primacy HP's from Bridgestone Turanza's on my C Class estate and the ride is vastly better. If you have access to it, then Costco is pretty good for Michelin - and they often have 20% off deals. Get the HP's if available in your size, they should last longer than standard Primacy's and they're the same price.

The quietest tyres I've ever heard were on a 1925 Rolls Royce shooting brake I saw a few months ago. It was early in the morning and the carpark was almost empty, as the car swept in past in total silence. I know the engines were famously silent, but the total absense of any noise from the tyres was uncanny.

I have just had Avon Enviros fitted,fuelsavers,they seem pretty quiet.£152 from National Tyres(185/65/14).

Go for the newer Primacy HP, The Pilot Primacy while its a bit old now design wise but its still a very good tyre.

I did some research and changed from Michelins on my Berlingo Multispace HDi to Vredestein Quatracs. The drop in road noise was nothing short of sensational! Suggest you check them out on the web for comparisons. At 14,000 miles they're around half worn and I got four of them for £205.

Go for Michelin Primacy HP, they replace the Michelin Pilot Primacy, they have shorter braking distances in dry and wet, quieter, more comfortable, more miles. I'm going to fit them onto my car to replace my existing Pilot Primacy's.

That's a surprising set of results - Vredestein Quatracs are All Season Tyres so one would expect them to be noiser than Summer tyres and probably to wear more quickly. New tyres do always seem quieter than old ones, though.
Do you have an opinion on whether the ride comfort is better/worse/same than with the Michelins?

they do, and are indeed quieter, as HJ pointed out in a reply to my posting earlier this year - because as tyres wear down more rubber is in contact with the road surface. Common sense really .. just wish it had occurred to me!

changed the bora fronts from goodyear nct5 to quadtrac2, definitely noisier. hopefully better grip in dirty/snow conditions in winter. jag.

The new Primacy HP is available at Costco with a 20% discount and I think I will give it a go. The curent Michelins have completed 38k and are all still legal however after the 2mm mark noticeably less effecient so time for a change. Thanks for all you comments

The expensive Michelins seem to be quiet ... but expensive. Not certain about cheaper Michelins. Avoid Firestones, nasty things.

Ive always found Michelin tyres more expensive.
Then again ive always found Michelin tyres to grip in wet or dry & have a much longer service life then anything Pirelli, Goodyear, Firestone & Dunlop can come up with.
Have Goodyears at the moment ( came with the car ) & I cant wait to get rid of them.

The TRXs on my elderly Granadas were the best tyres I've used in 25+ years, faultless in the wet and quiet at speed, but when a set of four cost more than the value of the car it's time to try something else (Avons and retreads ... yuck).
Wet weather handling and braking is perhaps at the top of my list, so Vredesteins are desireable, I suspect that Goodyear NCT5s are over-rated, Pirelli can get very slippery with age (in my experience). Firestone last well but are otherwise awful, Dunlop are only slightly better.

I'm a fan of Vredestein Quatrac 2 as well. And no they are not noisy and no they do not wear out faster than the "summer" tyres I have used. At the pace I drive the grip is adequate. I'm on my third set.
