Just underlines that Volvo has no common sense when it comes to customer relations, let alone safety.

Tuned in just after it finished, what were they covering about Volvo ?

Apparently some models can simply cut out without warning - happened in the middle of a motorway to one person I think. How dangerous does it have to be before its a safety recall?

Theres nothing wrong with it.
Us poor Peugeot 206 owners have suffered random cut out while driving problems for over a year & we still wait a fix from Peugeot.

I have never seen any-one in a volvo driving above 25 m.p.h. I have been stuck behind hundreds of the things, with there lights on of course. Still a very serious concern all the same. Graham.

The story was the on-going issue of the electronic accelerator module - it apparently can cut out at any time and leave the car in "limp home" mode - 30mph.
Story of C70 driver in outside lane @70mph when it failed - he flet lucky to make the hardshoulder.
In the USA there is a re-call - 175,000 cars - in the UK the cost is around £650 as Volvo do not own up to the problem and the punter pays.
If the true cost of the repair to Volvo is say £200 then 175,000 cars is £35m. Seems cheap comapred to the potential loss of sales @ £20,000 / car in the UK.
Volvo UK now say a contribution will be made in the UK but no re-call.
Watchdog, What Car & the punters are not happy - are you? (if you have an affected Volvo?) - and there are lots of affected models - S60, S80, C70, V70s - list & years on Volvo website

Not seen this on TV, but it seems odd to me that this story has surface now. Its an old problem, I remember being told about it by lads who worked at the local Volvo agent back in 2003 or 2004. I had bought a Volvo at auction and sold it on to a private buyer. It came back within a couple of months with ETM and ABS faults. In the end it cost me best part of £1000 to sort out and so wiped out the profit (and a bit more). I have been suspicious of modern Volvos ever since, esp. S60 and S80 - heard a few too many stories of expensive electrical problems, not to mention problems with front suspension and engine mounts.

I got run over by a Volvo, and completely screwed by Volvo Owners Insurance, so they deserve everything that's coming to them.
(Me? Bitter? Pah!)

I think the programme was wrong for promoting the idea that the thing everyone associates with Volvo is safety. I test drove a rear wheel drive Volvo a few years ago and the lasting impression I got was how outdated it was.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Volvos that an HGV licence will not cure.

Slightly off topic but I personally think cars are getting too electronic and its causing all sorts of cut out problems on all sorts of cars and its all dangerous.
Going back a few years it was illegal to have a fuse or link etc in the igniton circuit so that a car could never have an electrical cut out in it as it was driving.
Times change etc (not always for the better)
My first boss described progress to me very well. Progress = advancing backwards !

I had a V70 with this problem and that's exactly why I sold it. That was nearly a year ago, which goes to show I made the right decision about getting rid - Volvo just couldn't care less.
The problem is worse that it first appears too, because the original ETMs last to around 100,000 miles or so (less in turbo models) but the replacements can fail within 10,000 miles or less!!
So, even if Volvo did a full re-call and replaced every affected ETM, it would actually make matters worse!! D'oh!
Nobody seems quite sure why the replacements are worse, although the current line of thought is that there are no brand new ETMs available for these cars, so all units being fitted are reconditioned ETMs - obviously not to original standard. You can tell the replacements apart because they have a different coloured sticker on them, which is suggestive in itself.
There's no easy way out for Volvo owners on this, if you own a petrol Volvo with the Magneti Marelli ETM built between 98 and 02, then do what I did, get rid promptly - that's my advice.
