How can I tell for sure if air conditioning is working on a brand new Audi A3??
Nothing technical please (because I amn't :) )
The reason I ask, is that it steams up, and no other car with aircon I've had (or indeed the previous A3) ever did.
Any help appreciated, otherwise it's a 4 hour round trip to the nearest dealer :(

Steams up when using it, or shortly after turning it off?
Is the recirculate button turned on or off?

Somewhere else within this forum I think I have read that a/c, set to maximim cooling, should give a temp of +6C at the oulet vents. You should be able to check that with a fridge thermometer as that is the temp a fridge is meant to be at!

Was it very cold outside? A/C won't work at low temps - below about 3-4C.
Are you sure Audi haven't made some daft change to the controls so that the method of operation is different to your previous car?

Oh the manual is far to complicated!...... Still she was driving me to the pub as various windows misted up.

It steams up during use rather than before or after by the way.
I think I'll go for the 2 easy options - run it for a bit and see if it dries out anything left 'in the pipes' and then turn it down and see what temp it gets to.....

This is a common problem with aircon equiped cars. I think the explanation is that moisture that the aircon has removed from the air condenses in some of the ducting etc, and causes the car to steam up again. I think the only recommended solution is that the fan should be run for a while to dry the system out after the aircon is switched off. Not easy to do at this damp time of year.

Most of the new stuff, especially the VAG cars, have a compressor that is permanently running, ie. there's no compressor clutch. They have a variable output that is controlled electrically. When defrost is asked for, it will crank up the output of the compressor even if the outside temperature is extremely low, thereby aiding defrosting, although it's hard to strip the moisture out when it's -6 outside. Normally the compreesor wouldn't run below a certain temperature, usually 2 or 3*.
However, there have been a phenominal amount of failures with these new compressors, so it could be it's not working. Interestingly, they are made under licence from Denso, who normally produce very high quality components used extensively by Japanese manufacturers. As far as I know, no Japanese OEM's are using these compressors.

It can help to change it, but in this case the OP is saying his car is brand new.
