My brother in law has had stroke and will not be leaving hospital for at least 3 months. Will almost certainly not be driving again.
Car is due for MOT and service by end of month.

Questions.
1: Am i covered by my insurance to take car for service and MOT.
2: Presumably it is worth getting service and MOT before selling car as car could not be driven on road by buyer
3: How do i SORN car.
4: What about car insurance.
The only risk is theft or fire from locked garage

Thanks

Answer to question 3 You get a form to fill in from a PO or local DVLA office BUT remember it cannot be parked or used on a public road if under SORN

Regarding SORN then read:

and you have to the end of this month plus 15 days to play with it. Obviously better at the end of the month when Excise expires. Whilst you can do it on line taking the Licence renewal form to PO you do at least get a witness that it has been done.

Again more attractive to a buyer if it has a service history and current MOT.

Regarding Insurance check carefully your policy to see if contains a clause that that you can drive a car not belonging to you or hired etc. If so then this will cover your trip to the Garage.

1) If your insurance covers you, probably with the "Driving other cars" extension, then yes. However, don't leave it parke don the road. If in doubt, ring your insurers and check (get a name).
2) No idea
3)No idea
4) Norwich Union short period insurance mat well be what your looking for, but you need to explain a bit more.

1)DOC cover will be stated on your Insurance Cert
2) MoT is essential as buyer would be put off with no MoT. Service depends on whether it is due to be looked at - might be a selling point but again weigh up value of car and cost of service - if it is a £500 car no poiint spending £100 on a service - A £100 spent on a service and £30 on a Valet will reap benefits on a £5,000 motor
3) Post Office
4) Current insurer of the car may offer Fire & Theft insurance if this is required.

The tax runs out on the last day of a month. If you're changing to SORN you DON'T get 15 days to do so, you only get 15 days to re-tax the vehicle.

An Mot is vital to sell a car and a long Mot is useful. Don't bother with the service if the car's running ok, use the cost of that to negotiate / clinch the deal - ie offer to knock £100 off the asking price to cover the cost of the next service.
