I am thinking about privatly buying an Audi A3 TDI (90) Y reg to replace my Peugeot 306 HDI meridian of which i have been quite happy wiht good fuel consunption and good handling. I have fancied an A3 for some time but the problem with this one is that this one has 129k on the clock, my current car has 116K. asking price is £3900. full service history is available also.
Any opinions on the car ?? i havent seen it yet as i will probably go for a look next week. I am in shetland isles and the choice of avaiable car is limited unless you make special trip south. Car has been in isles for 2 years and came from deepest england.

If its been serviced it should have plently of life in it. Check the cambelt has been changed - it should be on its 3rd belt by now.

never been to thick jumper county ,but consider who where and how much for any spares/repairs and just put that also into the equation.

The drive train should do double that, its all the bushes, shocks, bearings etc that will be worn.
If its in nice condition and full history haggle hard ;o)

Unless you're thinking of getting a remap done,I think you might find the TDi 90 rather underpowered. What's the power output of your own car? I would also ask if there is there something specific about your current car that makes you want to change it (eg a recurring or expensive fault, expensive service coming up, etc), or is it more that you just fancy a change. If your own car is reliable and ticks all the right boxes, then to be honest I can't see that you'd be doing much other than spending a wedge of money for a car which may not be as good as the one you currently have. If the Audi's suspension hasn't needed attention already, it's reasonably likely that it will soon.
I have a couple of VAG cars, a Mk1 Leon with the TDi 110 engine and a Passat with the same. I got the Passat at about 90k miles and suspension has given me a fair amount of annoyance, while the cabin isn't the quietest in terms of squeaks and rattles. The Leon (now on 80k miles from new) has a superior cabin in terms of being properly screwed together, but I definitely wouldn't want a lesser powered engine in it. Considering it's the same platform as the A3, this may be relevant to you.

90 bhp in a 1.9 XUDT 306 is pretty quick... not tried an HDi 306 though. Spares for most things on the Audi, like the Peugeot, should be available mail order from Euro Car Parts for sensible money (plus possibly a bit for postage).
What bothers me most about this deal is that you're spending roughly twice as much as you'll get for your own car and gaining nothing in performance, handling or refinement. It is a better badge, the interior is nicer and there's a possibility that it might be more reliable but in measurable terms it's hard to see how you're getting much for the extra cash at all.
