Very Loud Noise - hillman
While I was driving home tonight along a dimly lit road on a light industrial estate there was a frighteningly loud noise. It sounded much like an explosion some long distance away, but SWMBO agreed that it enveloped us. It was a thud rather than a bang. I was cautious lest it was an attempt to cause me to stop so that person or persons unknown could carry out a car-jacking. There was no obvious effect on the handling or running of the car, so I didn?t stop. My son had a similar incident a year ago when a group of children were throwing half bricks at cars and laughing like cretins when they hit one. Any ideas anyone ? I imagine that if anything had hit my car I would have felt the impact through the fabric. I couldn?t see anything when I stopped in the supermarket car-park, but I?m going to examine the car carefully tomorrow morning when it is light enough to see.

Possible you could have driven over something?

Noises against the floor or wheelarches or even of plastic bottles popping can be mysterious to say the least !

Hope you dont find any damge tho

Well there could be 1000 different explanations without any evidence to help us out to make a guess but could it have been some kids letting off cheap left over fireworks nearby?

Without knowing the business on the light industrial estate and assuming your car is undamaged.... you'll probably never know.

Check the local press tomorrow to see if something happened on the industrial estate?

Perhaps some idiot let off a distress maroon, as used in certain nautical circumstances. Or maybe you are on the coast and it was legitimate.

Near the Donna Nook bombing range, perhaps?

a few years ago i was driving a transit across an area that is very barren at night and i heard a noise like you would hear on the telly where a bullet penetrates metal, when i looked round the vehicle in the light of day i could find nothing (it was a scary experiance thinking someone was shooting at you i might add)
Afew weeks later the same thing happened this time on the m62 so i pulled up and investigated again and this time checking under the bonnet
What did i find?
The gearbox to engine bolts had all disappeared and a gap was clearly seen between the two so it was the bolts flying out that i heard
Mystery solved

Some of the modern fireworks have an excruciatingly loud bang - in fact even the double glazing doesn't seem to cut down much of the noise they can generate.

Perhaps, as already suggested, it was a firework being let off? There were plenty still going off last night in our area...:-(

Fireworks being let off in our vicinity again tonight. Lots of the really big/loud/expensive variety.

Reminds me of an incident a couple of years back. I was driving down a dual carriageway, in a VW Transporter on a bright sunny afternoon , when an almighty bang scared the living..... out of me. Everything seemed fine, so continued with my journey, a little startled to say the least. A couple of days later, I got back in the van. The driver's sun visor had been folded down all this time because of the sun, at this point I folded it back up and found a fifty pence piece size crack/shatter in the windscreen, up to that point hidden by the sun visor.

On reflection, i then recalled the incident happened in the region of a road bridge over the dual carriageway, notorious for vermin throwing things at passing cars. I put two and two together.

It's not the kids who are vermin IMO, it's the parents.

I've always been an advocate of punishing parents for the actions of their offspring. You can be punished if your dog bites someone, so why not if your kid does the same? It's the parents' responsibility.

If a kid is caught doing something like this, three months in jail for the parents. I can guarantee that youth crime would decimate overnight.

I had a situation similar on a motorway, an incredibly loud *Bang* on the car.
Later I found an indentation that puzzled me due to its odd shaped indentation.
The best fit was a lorry wheelnut from over the central reservation.

I found out this morning what the great noise was. My son was right, it was a fist sized lump of concrete thrown at the car. I drove down that road again this morning to look. There is a building site with hoardings around except for the gate where the missile came from. It was left lying there in the road. It hit the driver?s door in the centre and left three scratches, two of them quite deep. I was very surprised that such an impact could make such a loud noise. It must be the way that modern cars are built which amplified it. The door would have flexed under the impact, the sound proofing would have attenuated the edge of the sound and the lower frequencies would be amplified .
To say I am displeased is inadequate. I had just made up my mind to trade it in for a new one.

Well, at least there is some satisfaction in pinning it down. May we know where it happened, please? And I hope you will report it in writing to the police, even if you think they won't be interested.

"May we know where it happened, please? "

It happened on the Stanley green light industrial estate following a back way in to the Tesco and M&S stores in Handforth Dean near to Manchester. On Epsom Avenue there is a big building site with a 2.5 metre high hoarding around it, with advertisments painted on for an office development. Opposite the end of Arkle Avenue there is an opening with a big wire mesh double gate behind which the stone throwers were waiting. I got the details of the developer and phone number, and I intend to phone on Monday and ask them to replace the wire mesh with a wooden gate like the hoarding. I went to Hazel Grove police station to report it on Friday and Saturday, but the station is only open 9 to5 weekdays.

If someone get one of those lumps of concrete though the windscreen it will be very serious.

You'll need to report it to wilmslow police station as it is in their patch. The chavs will be from Handforth spath lane estate which backs directly onto that area.

Open office hours too I think.

Hillman, do let us know if the police actually DO anything about it.

Having still had no response to my message to A.N. Other Cheshire police "force", I am rapidly losing faith. The chavs are taking over the world.

"Hillman, do let us know if the police actually DO anything about it.

I wrote to the building company and the police, with copies to both. I have not received any replies, though.
I went past the site yesterday and found that the gates had been covered by a wood surface. Just what I asked them to do in my letter.
Now I will have to get the dent repaired or trade the car in as is.
