Oh I'm sick of fireworks - Mapmaker
I know this will be modded and end up in the Silly thread or something, but I'm sitting in the middle of London, less than 1,000 yards south of Tower Bridge.

Last night they started at 5.30 and went on until after 11; incessantly.

Tonight it is the same - if not worse.

It's like being in a war zone.

Yours curmudgeonly, and seriously considering going to sit on a deep tube line with the newspaper and a brown paper bag and a half bottle of whisky where I cannot hear anything,

Mapmaker.

Yes it will be modded but we'll leave it till 6 November to allow the Grumpy Old Men (and Women) amongst us let off steam.

I'm with Mappy btw - throughly fed up with 'em!

They don't make much difference to the overall noise level round here, although there's this formal suggestion of civil insurrection about the clamour that isn't usually there. We get quite a good view from our sitting room window of a couple of good displays fairly nearby if we're lucky, without needing to go up and freeze on the roof for the 360 degree view.

In North Africa on the feast of Mouloud (the Prophet Muhammad's birthday) horrible youths throw firecrackers under your chair in restaurants, or used to. Now that can wind you up a bit.

it's good to see there's some other right miserable old sods out there..........the dogs hate them.....

I'd be o.k. with it if it was one night a year and that was that, but here it starts about 2 weeks before and lasts a month afterwards . Some cretins let them off in the day time.

if we're that much of a nanny state and have banned anything remotely hazardous under 'Health and Safety' how on earth can we justify letting the average thicko let off a load of explosives

Certainly not TVM. That is an irresponsible attitude guaranteed to lead to trouble. Better safe and very, very, very, very, boring than terrific fun and a tiny bit sorry just once in a blue moon. The point is if you aren't having any fun and are doing your best to stop anyone else having any, well then they can't blame you when some fool alleges something's gone wrong and screams the place down, can they?

As HJ points out, Fawkes, Catesby et al. wanted to blow up the commons (and perhaps the king too) for what seemed to them good political reasons. Hard to believe they thought they could get away with it as secret police were everywhere in the early 17th century, and one would think especially so at the bottom end of Whitehall. Indeed it is thought they were under surveillance throughout and encouraged to pull out enough rope to hang themselves (the drawing and quartering were a government bonus then available by law for those guilty of sedition).

Alas, the modern terrorist manages to evade that close surveillance by choosing soft targets at random.

Didn't personally have any fireworks, but as usual treated tonight as a brilliant excuse to get rid of a lot of old rubbish (no tyres though!!) that has been accumulated over the year in the sheds etc, we don't live in an area of dense population so let rip with a good old 'bonnie'. I don't personally mind fireworks as long as they aren't let off at stupid times. Bird scaring (std. agricultural issue) fireworks are the thing, they shake your windows out.

In our village, we get them at all sorts of times of the year. However, around 5/11, they go on for about a fortnight. Last night, it must have gone on for about 5 hours or more. I don't mind the pretty lights, it's the incessant, very loud explosions that are tiresome.

There's nothing like an old tyre to get a good fire going.

Best of all, if you take the old tyre away, you don't have to pay the £1 disposal fee.

I don't mind people enjoying themselves with fireworks at the right time and the right place.

However, it's an all year round trend in my area - it needs only the slightest excuse to set off fireworks it seems.

If I had a car and the exhaust made the same level of noise as some of the truly loud bangers you can buy these days I'd been handed a fixed penalty...:-)

By the way cats, dogs and many other animals' hearing is far, far more efficient than mere humans and it's literally very painful for them.

I'm surprised the cat will even dare venture out with a name like that...:-)

At least all my cats have also come when whistled (a legacy of having dogs as well) although it's easy to teach a cat to do so.

The people over the road to me must have spent a gazzillion pounds on fireworks. Apart from the schoooooom, bang....ba ba bang bang bang, bang bang, ba ba bang....there was the sound of spent rockets landing in the street and on car roofs from a height of about 200ft!
Oh I'm sick of fireworks - Lud
Oh God. Stand by for two or three threads tomorrow on people's claims against as yet unarrested neighbours for invisible damage to bloomed red eight-year-old Ford Mondeos....'The only fair solution is a total respray. I choose a tangerine-flake fishscale finish with 117 coats of lacquer and a few flourishes by, er, is Picasso still alive?'

Do me a favour.

Interesting to note the difference in attitude towards the fireworks by cats and dogs.

The dogs along the street were all barking, and ours was cowering in a corner, whimpering, poor thing.

The cats, however, found it all fascinating. Bolt upright in the back room watching the displays, pawing the window every so often as if they wanted to play with them. Obviously realising they were dangerous though as when I opened the back door they were off to join the dog, only to return when the door was safely shut again.

I deduce from this that the cats are somewhat smarter than the mutt, although I knew that already!!

The daft thing is that you can be locked up for dropping a sweet wrapper though light send a big lump of wood and cardboard a few hundred feet into the air with high explosives and no one in authourity cares a hoot!

No as bad round here as last year, the yoof cant get em cos the newsagents are more worried about fines aka booze and fags.
Oh I'm sick of fireworks - madf
People who spend their money on rockets very kindly provide me with free nicely planed lengths of wood for tying up plantys, stirring paint an dother minor tasks.
Collect them on morning walk.

Our neighbours spend what must be £000s to keep us awake and entertained at this time of year:-)

actually there is a motoring connection - and it is the fact that on fireworks on cold clear november nights lead to a thick fog the next morning, and probably in turn lead to a few car accidents in the poor visibility.

They are usually all year round here. Fortunately there doesn't seem to have been as many this year. There is somebody nearby who likes to let off a really loud one (just one) at random times of the year at about 2-4 o'clock in the morning. The last time really sacred me, I was shaking for a while, and I couldn't get back to sleep. I felt terrible the next day because I had so little sleep. Around here they seem to be going at all times, even at mid-day.
