yes it is possible to change the tensioner without removing the engine! The job can only be done with it on a lift,is certainly not the easiest of jobs as you have to unbolt the alternator aas it is bolted through the tensioner bracket. Also you have to take the alt. off to change the belt as it is routed through the inside of the tensioner ,presumably you wan to change it as it noisy.

If your concern is a drumming noise at idle you shouild be replacing the crank pulley as well as the tensioner and belt. pulley is the root cause.

There was a TSB on the thrumming noise at idle inc revised parts, a Ford dealer will probably help out if the car has FSH even if it is out of warranty. Mine was done at around 3 years / 85k miles FOC to me.

The crank pulleys can fall apart on older Tcdi's - so if its making a noise then get it checked out asap.

Thanks for all the input.....I think that I may have overcooked this problem it seems likely to be the crank pulley (by your submissions) and not the tensioner pehaps I might have saved a few bob if
I posted this first before I Brought the parts ........Many thanks
