Why has diesel gone up, so that it is now 4p a litre more than unleaded.
This has happened shortly after I have just bought my first diesel car!
Historically, diesel was always slightly cheaper than ordinary petrol, so what
has changed?

Welcome to the club Mike,I too have recently purchased my first diesel
& watched prices climb.Its my understanding that we are penalised by the goverment due to particulates emissions in the first place but these are
significantly reduced by using ultra low sulpher fuel now on the market. Diesels produce less Co2 than petrol.There is much less benzene(carcinogen)
The fuel consumes less energy than petrol to produce & diesels use between30%-40% less fuel than comparable petrol engines.I could bore you further!
Government thinking , in my opinion, is based on anti diesel propoganda
served up to them in varying forms by various bodies & we suffer accordingly
until such time as education spreads that diesels are no longer stinking
black beasts that choke you with their filthy emissions.Government too
wants to keep the tax revenue.
I had believed that diesel price increases were kept in line with petrol
increases ? However, they have dropped 2p/litre locally recently again,in line
with petrol. America cost is 25p/litre!
I am sure Honest John can put it in better perspective & I am also sure thatthe Day of the Diesel is coming,

Buy cooking oil in 25 litre cans and use that ,thats what we use in Germany
Aldi is the best works out at 15 pence a litre

I would like to ask if it is a safe option to run my 1999 VW polo 1.9 D on cooking oil ? If so, then why isn't everyone doing it and saving themselves a fortune in the process ? Also, if anything should go wrong then would it effect my warranty ? Also, if there are no additives in the 'fuel' will it damage the 'cat' or effect performance, or at the worst cause damage to the engine ?
I hope honest john can shed some light on this subject as there are a lot of 'ifs and buts' about it.

Dear Mike,
The main reason is that diesel is basically the same stuff as heating oil. There is a finite amount that can be refined from every barrel of crude and in the winter demand for heating oil rises. Also, this winter, stocks of heating oil were low. The answer is supply and demand, not unfavourable taxation in this case.

I have run a diesel Astravan. and with HJ's advice have changesd the oil every 6 months (millers synthetic) and used thier fuel addictive and it's just run in @ 134k, pity I have to sell it due to needing an auto with decent legroom, maybe I should have run it on Alovera or Virgin Olive Oil! I must admit I am considering LPG next time and eating a lot of beans! Move to France and its cheaper to fill up, and save on the booze! > BC (in UK)honestjohn wrote:
