Over the past few months, drivers in the Basingstoke area have had to endure an obstacle course of supermarket trolleys dropped onto carriageways from overpasses and upturned trolleys left in the middle of the road in poorly lit areas.
If someone gets hit by or collides with one of these things, what responsibility, if any, does the supermarket hold assuming that they could not reasonably claim to be unaware of the problem?

Interesting question Cleaner Neighbourhood Act puts some responsibility on the shops for ensuring their trollies are tethered at night and not allowed ot roam free. From a Criminal Liability I would say marginal, from a Civil perspective that could be an interesting one, just thinking on there could be a H&S Liability as well......

And me, I could espouse a personal theory but it would be particuallarly tasteless in the times we live in.

And totally motoring connected as this is directly connected to the decline of motoring manners which can make motoring such a misery.
As a plus point went to my old school 50 year celebrations the other week, a tonic, a good school which has turned out a fair number of male and female talents in all professions over the years (my little crowd became Architects, Doctors, Teachers etc) including singers and musicians, and given the performance of the youngsters the other night it looks pretty secure for the future. So it's not all doom an gloom.

Supermarket trolley? Girl's hazard!
I ran over a breeze block standing on edge with both offside wheels at 30mph in the middle of a small Sussex town once. Thought it was a cardboard box until too late. I have sometimes wondered how it came to be there. This rural hooliganism we read about sometimes, although I don't remember seeing any hooligans.
Fortunately I was driving a Land Rover belonging to someone else, which bucked but was largely unharmed ... red faced apology and a bit of blacksmithing on wheel rims with a big hammer afterwards.

We can blame the EU for loads - but if we had more supermaket trolley arrangements like those in France, where you have to deposit a coin to release the trolley, maybe some of the problems would be solved.

But for those of you who have travelled a bit; ;surely you have noticed the majority of europe (certainly the bit where the rule makers are) is a far better place to be than here!
Much deeper problem imo, more like immigration into europe.

Why can't all supermarkets get coin locked trolleys. Makes perfect sense. I'm fed up with seeing chavs just leaving trolleys next to their cars stopping someone else from parking there. I'm also amazed that shoppers seem to push the things home! This is probably how oiks find them abandoned and pram each other around until they get bored and lob it off a bridge.
France seem to only have coin locked trolleys and they survive. Supermarkets must benefit and you get your money back!

Nearly all supermarkets in Spain have coin deposit trolleys. I can assure you that it doesn't entirely solve the problem of their being left in car parks, outside blocks of flats, in underground carparks dedicated to the flats in the block, et al.
One Euro is the standard coin to release the locks - in the UK £1.
Neither is enough to stop lazy, inconsiderate people writing off such a paltry sum to save their legs!
Make the UK coin requirement a two pound coin and it might make a difference. (Yes - the Mint would have to make more - but what will a single quid buy you these days?) Here I guess a two euro thingy would do.

I don't think so, but you are entitled to your own opinion.
My original post was prompted by a conversation I had with a cabbie.
He was complaining that on Saturday night, cars were having to dodge an overturned trolley laid in the A30 between Basingstoke Golf Club and M3 J7. The weekend before, one of his colleagues nearly hit a trolley blocking one of the pinch-points in Hatch Warren. He regularly sees trolleys abandoned by the side of the road but deliberately leaving them as an obstruction is something relatively new.
My reply was that I had seen two similar incidents recently. About a month ago, a trolley had been dropped from the Brunel Road overpass onto Ringway West, it's remains were still there when I went past at about 8am the next morning. Then, two weeks ago, three trolleys were dropped from the footbridge over the A33 near the Tesco roundabout. That incident even got a mention on Kestrel traffic reports since it happened in the morning and caused a minor tailback.
Whether it is over-dramatisation or not, the real question is whether a supermarket could be held partially responsible for any damage by failing to discourage trolleys being taken away from the store. Hit one of those things at anything faster than crawling pace and repairs will be in the hundreds.

Remember in my Safeway days, a Scot Rail worker driving up in his van to the shop and bringing out a lump of twisted metal. Apparently it was one of our trolleys that had been thrown onto a railway line and subsequently hit by a train. I would not have known it was a trolley if he hadn't told me!
