Rover 414 si 96-n failed mot - reevsie
Car has failed mot on os headlight producing insufficient beam pattern. Its definately not the bulb as the problem persists when I swapped bulbs and i get no joy when i unclip the bulb and fidlle with it in situ. Its a bit puzzling, the lens look ok to me with no discolouration or damage. any sugeestions or is it a trip to the breakers. Had the mot done at a council depot btw.

Are you sure it was fitted properly,it must sit in the mounting correctly or this will happen.Hard to get to so easy done ie beam pattern incorrect...and it wont be the headlamp unit!

the bulb doesnt seem to fit terribly well within the mounting and on closer inspection the headlamp is a lucas unit whereas the other one is a rover. i have fiddled with the bulb in the mounting with the lights on to try and get a pattern but to no avail.

No amount of fiddling will correct a bulb with a faulty lens, try buying one from another supplier/take others back to where you got them

Try swapping the bulbs from each headlight to confirm if it is the bulb, holder on lamp unit ?

Yep, I must have been dazzled by the lights; I missed that!

What does insufficient beam pattern mean? was that what was written on the mot fail?

But sounds like time to visit scrap yard or motor factors!

to pass the mot you need a defined beam pattern whereas the suspect headlight just diffuses the light. i cant understand how a lens loses its effectiveness, it doesnt looked discoloured or dislodged, maybe its always been like that and i got a pedantic mot tester.

its probably got an aftermarket headlamp on it and the mot man wasnt doing his job properly in previous years,
I find lots of headlights like this, especially bread/butter cars like fiestas corsas micras etc, sometimes just a change of bulb (again import rubbish previously fitted) will sort it, but ive certainly had to change headlamps before now because they dont have a cutoff pattern.
