What do you think is best buy for an early nineties Mercedes.. ..230 series or 190 series .?

You mean W124 or W201, I guess. Best buy in what sense? If to sell on, then little difference, I would think. If for comfort, then W124, which is a distinctly larger car. If for economy, then W201. If for maintenance costs, the W201 will be marginally cheaper, but not much. I doubt that there's much difference between them in terms of reliability and durability, except that a W201 might have been pushed around more. Both are very well built, although, like every other car, they do have their weaknesses, which are very well documented around the Web and can therefore be anticipated, budgeted for and, if spotted before the purchase, knocked off the price.

Of course, there are many models in each range, so everything said above will depend on which one is being considered.

I had a 92 reg 180 two ltr petrol, ran it for 3 years , towing caravan all over bonnie Scotland, Wales etc no probs whatsoever, superb car built like the proverbial brick outhouse !! Swapped it for new 180 C class, petrol, three years ago.......big mistake !!Not a patch on old 180, e.g. replacement gear box at just 2 years old !! Seriously considering getting rid of C class and reverting to older Merc, far superior cars to modern day one.

The W201 is basically just a slightly shrunken version of the W124. A lot of parts are shared (look on the W201 and see how many parts start 124-
If really comes down to rear seat legroom and a little bit on the width.

Thanks for your insight Rodger.

You should get at least 25-30 mpg with a 230 W124 and (I'm guessing) 30-35 with a W201. I get 28 out of my W124 320 Coupé, with careful driving, an unfair share of long trips, and an engine pre-heater.
