Rather than look up Google, is the speed limit on the big lorries and coaches 56mph, and if that is so, how can they reach 70+ with speed limiters ?? Are speed lomiters fitted to all coaches and large lorries and do the lorries from Europe have speed limiters as a mandatory item?

They can't can they. I drove a minibus limited to 60 recently and can assure you that even downhill with a following wind and my foot going through the floor it would not go above 60. I suppose that there is the odd (?) truck that has its limiter disabled?

PU, the plus sign refers to the note at the bottom of the table which says "60 if articulated or towing a trailer"

IIRC some petrol tankers have wording on the back saying "Limited to 56mph" .

Isn't it because 56mph equates to some obscure metric measurement from abroad, and that speed in turn is a foreign dictate ?

90 kph? It's a figure often seen on the back of big trucks in France (others are 100kph, tankers 80 kph)

New LGV's over 7.5t gvw have to be fitted with 56mph limiters. New coaches are set at 62mph currently - I think.

LGV's over 7.5t have to have a speed limiter fitted, this to a maximum of 90kph (56mph), some have it set lower - maritime transport set theirs to 52mph as do some of the supermarket chains. Coaches I believe are set to 65mph.
On modern trucks you cant easily get round the speed limiter, but they will overrun going down hill if you let them - even the Govt can't stop gravity!!!! On older wagons there are various tricks (on a DAF it was contralled by fuse 21, pull the fuse and hey presto no limiter), but they have all been designed out now.
Legally the limit for a truck in the uk is still 60mph, hence thats what it says in the highway code.

I think there are two different areas of law here. Speed limits and speed limiters.
At the moment, any goods vehicle up to and including 7.5 tonners - on a motorway - are subject to the same limits as a car. They're entitled to use the outside lane at 70mph.
New legislation means that NEW 7.5 tonners sold in the UK have to be limited to 56mph. But, it the truck isn't to be used out of the UK, this limiter can be disabled. (for the time being). Over the next couple of years any newish ? vehicle over 3.5t Gvw will have to have the limiter re-installed. This means that older, pre limiter trucks will still be able to to do 70mph. As for HGV's over 7.5t exceeding 56mph, their motorway speed limit is 60mph and if they're old enough not to have a limiter fitted, they can go as fast as the engine will allow. A few years ago I worked with a driver who's tacho disc often showed speeds over 80mph (Volvo 6 wheeler with hiab).

In my experience, the trucks exceeding the 60 limit are eastern european in older vehicles - I have followed one at 80 and it was pulling away from me. The more modern trucks tend to be somewhat slower due to the reasons already outlined.
What has made me laugh is that when driving an unladen Iveco 3.5t Luton, my dad in a 7.5t Iveco could maintain higher speeds than me and I had foot to the floor on the M1, just managing to maintain 70mph. So embarrising. Saying that, I drove an very old Transit Luton that could barely manage 60 and slowed down to 50 odd uphill, even with a run up!
Its all about horsepower!

the thing that gets me and i know i am in the frozen north but as each year goes on you find that the foreign driver has more respect on our roads
when they pass me in my old truck and i flash them its safe to pull in with their drawbar trailers or their extra lond rigids they say thanks, the english registereds on the whole dont
if they pull up and ask for directions in their eu trucks they might not speaka english but they sure know how to say tanka the english dont, i have to say thankyou to them as they go back to their trucks and they turn and give me a glazed look
