I think thats a lie. Not spin - a lie.
9 months is 270 days, They have to seize 37 cars a day, every day, 7 days a week to meet that amount.
They dont have the facilities to do that.

it seems highly unlikely, unless they've done a deal with a private contractor to deal with the cars seized. In the London area the seizures are in the lowish hundreds, purely because there is nowhere to store the cars.
The powers to seize are available to all police officers, but in London only traffic officers have been authorised to do it, for that reason.
Eventually, it seems like a damned good tool, because if your car isn't insured or taxed and that fact can be picked up on the ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) system from police cars, then your cars going to a pound........cough up for that and the insurance/tax or sign a disclaimer and cheerio car..it gets sold or scrapped.

And what about the foreign-registered cars driving around in their scores? Presumably the ANPR is useless for them.
In Peterborough it is reported that a huge number have been involved in accidents and it suspected that many are not roadworthy. Maybe something to do with illegal immigration or migrant workers?

ANPR is useless, but the police officer driving the police car can stop the foreign registered car and check themselves and still use the power.
all foreign registered cars only have 12 months over here, before they have to be UK legal..........trouble is it goes on the 'too difficult' pile, because of other 'priorities' and with less and less traffic officers available, it gets left.

This worries me in Reading also, with a large number of non-UK plated migrant worker cars, as I wonder how straight-forward a no-blame insurance claim against one of these drivers would be.

It hardly seems surprising that so many people do it, especially around the less affluent areas with deterrents like that.
All said, I would make a PROFIT from being caught three times (hmm, where are the traffic police) in a single year driving without insurance compared to what I am actually paying fully comp on my car.

I think they end up at auction. I was involved in trying to find a suitable property for a police force. They wanted undercover storage for at least 500 cars.

Cars are recovered by local recovery agencies. Doesn't cost the Police a penny!

Then are auctioned and they go back on the streets and the circle begins again ,as the worst drop out in the scrapyards they are quickly replaced by new ones so the stock carries on as before hardly anybody pays the fines so what looks good on the face of it has a murkier side.

They are seized until the registered keeper can present all the documentation to allow them to drive off legally. Otherwise they are scrapped or sold.

What are the problems of plod or the council selling a car to which they have no legal title (perhaps they do), No V5 and no keys. Major problems I'd say or they ought to be very very cheap!

i think you might be surprised how many people buy cars/bikes without a V5........personally i wouldn't touch one with a barge pole.......but......my little brother, with a small bike repair business, does it all the time. I've no idea how he hasn't come unstuck.......unless he has and hasn't told me, but he still does it........just writes to DVLA for a new one.

a scrap yard called ogleys in barnsley (now gone and the usual tat being built there) was easily doing 37 cars a day they were cubing them as they came into the yard and the size of the cubes all stacked nearly dwarfed the queen mary if she had been there (the ship not the lady ;-) )

But what's to stop the owner taking it over to Calais for a day or so and then bringing it back ?
By doing that, wouldn't he or she then be allowed a further 12 months over here ?

My little sister, who has never had much respect for Rules, returned to the UK after living in Germany for 15 years or so with a Mercedes which she carried on driving over here until it died of old age! She never changed the plates, and paid no VED, on the odd occasion she was stopped by police she only spoke German and it never went any further.
She now lives in Senegal, hardly any traffic law out there at all I gather.

Driving without insurance kind of loses its appeal with a wife and baby. Therefore, our rhd Astra is on German plates, even though it was a bit of a fig to sort it out.
Quite how much longer it remains here is another matter as Mrs B is getting increasingly frustrated with having the steering wheel on the wrong side....

When we lived by the coast our Italian/British neighbour drove an Italian registered Saxo for all the time we were there - 8 years. Probably not taxed, insured or MOT'd - I asked her what she did if stopped, and she said she just used Italian to get out of being nicked for anything.....
And of course no parking tickets, speeding tickets etc.
On the flip side of this, whilst in France recently saw a Brit registered Jeep with no tax on the screen, so I assume it had no tax, MOT, insurance blah blah....

I sold a Porshe 944 s in 1996 in the UK brought in on 3 day transit plates its still about running on the same plates.

You will find that the seized cars that are not collected by their legitimate owner are sold for parts only or for scrap. They are not allowed to be used / put back on the road, they have to be 'destroyed'.

i agree simon only cars seized by customs and excise or whatever title they are using this week offer vehicles for resale,and having looked at whats on offer rarely are they worth buying as they are wanted by all and sundry or are worse than sheds

All this will do is to increase the number of cars driving around on cloned plates.

Chief Inspector Haydn Roberts said:
"The power to seize uninsured motor vehicles or those being driven by an
unlicensed driver is a great opportunity to make our roads safer and also
deny criminals the use of the roads. GMP took a strategic decision at the
beginning of 2006 to maximise the use of the legislation that allows this.
We have structured the delivery of our road policing units to enable this.
"GMP is averaging over 1000 vehicle seizures a month which peaked in May
when the total was 1351. Owners of the vehicles have 2 weeks to make
themselves or their vehicles legal and when they are fully compliant with
the law and have paid the necessary fees they can reclaim their vehicles.
Some vehicles are not reclaimed and these are disposed of. GMP do not
handle or store any of the vehicles seized. This work is undertaken by 12
Recovery Agents who are part of the GMP vehicle recovery scheme.
"I can assure the member of the public who questioned these figures that
they are accurate and the whole process of seizing vehicles is strictly
controlled and audited. It is fair to say that GMP did not anticipate the
total number of vehicles seized would reach the 10,000 so quickly but with
an estimated 2 million vehicles being used on our roads without insurance
we still have more work to do."

This is brilliant! If every police force in the country seized this number of cars, it would be a massive step to reducing congestion!
