This has happened to me twice in the last week, is it now becoming a common occurance?
Driving along a street near to the city centre and looking for a parking space, I find a nice space with one or two people standing in it, I pull past it & start to reverse into it. One of the people standing in the space rushes to my drivers door, I open the window and they explain "You can't park here, I'm saving this space for my friend in that car which is approx 30 metres in front on the other side of the road waiting on a double yellow line. Rather than make an issue of it and waste time argueing, I've driven off to find another space.
I wouldn't mind if the space was outside somebodys house and the occupant was moving the car into the space, but I consdier what has happened cheeky.
I could have been obnoxious, continued reversing into the space, had an arguement, left the car in the space but then had the worry in case they had keyed my car when I had gone. But I didn't, life's too short to get stewed up over a parking space.
One day, they will try it with somebody who doesn't simply drive off & find another space.

Yeah, I've seen this a few times too. Unless you're in an old banger, it's not really worth getting involved in.

The town I work in has terrible parking problems in the summer (holiday resort), and it amazes me how much congestion one person will cause if they think they spot someone ready to come out of a space. They will simply stop...and wait.....and wait.......and wait. Seemingly oblivious to the huge queue forming behind them. Now, if the potential space is on the other side of the road, it doesn't take long for total gridlock to form.

I've occasionally been the passenger or driver in an obvious queue of folk looking for a parking space, where the car has stopped outside the space, dropped passenger off, who then "occupies" the space, while the car pulls forward, and backs neatly into the space.

If you think this is a bit daft, I once pulled foward of an empty space in a van, indicated and started reversing only for a pedestrian to bang on the side "stop". Yup, car behind had occupied the space I was obviously going to fill, and had the pedestrian not stopped me, I'd have backed into it as I could not see it in any of my mirrors.

The driver of the other car, legged it, avoiding my look. (I was rather too shocked to be angry at first, it was a hired van, I don't drive them often and I was being super careful etc.).

Hi WR

It happened to me once a few years ago and I've seen it happen a few times.

IMO, the people are chavs that do this and would argue and key your car!!!

< snip >

Just remebered - I do not condone this action but it made me smile. A friend about 5/8 years ago went to reverse park into a meter ed parking bay and old XJ6 just drove in behind him, the tyre over kerb. The car was a nice metalic blue. My mate was tocked off and knew it was not worht getting a beting from the thugs. So he parked up after about 15 mins and as he happeded to walk past the spot wher he was going to park, he left a long deep........................... on the car :)

I ticked him off for doing that, but he laughed!

Was this the same friend who drives an Audi . He seems to get 'tocked' off quite a lot!

When you reach the age of 42, and if you've lived an active life work wise and socially, you too will have come across many scenarios in life.

BTW - another friend/family memeber had his almost new BMW 5 series stolen from his drive when the car keys were plucked by a rod via lettetbox of his hall table.

Another friend had a rollover on the M^ years ago after a blow out and walked away without a scratch!

Another friend had his car keyed, twice within 2 weeks.

Another friend had his tyres slashed.

Another friend was a victim of road rage and had to drive to the cop shop for protection.

Another friend has his car towed away after if left on the meter for half an hout longer than anticipated as shed falled down some steps and rewquired first aid.

Another friend/family took a woman off the street and rushed her to hospital for the bith of her bay.

And there are many more stories, but I do not havfe the time to post them

I'm confused audiaudi, not that it matters of course, but I could have sworn you said you were in your 30s in the 'Off duty cop.....' thread;

"My friend is 'black' West Indian and the other two gentlemen are asian as well as me and all around the 30 mark other than the driver who is a bit younger"

Your friend is clearly a criminal and deserves to have his cambelt break in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere. Hopefully Karma will avenge him.

Dont worry my, er, friend!

if any of my friends 'keyed' a car whilst i was there, it doesn't matter who they are (best man, 25 year friendship or 1 year) they would instantly be an ex -friend

but in reality i really can't imagine any of my friends doing that........... you tend to be friendly with people who have mostly similar attributes to yourself...don't you.

With coucils painting more and more double lines everywhere to force people into paid parking spaces and meters we'll see more and more New York style robinhoodery and straight violence around parking spaces. It's not uncommon already to see arms waving, horn honking dramas involving car locked between two other bumper to bumper parked vehicles early in the morning or two drivers arguing for hours about the parking spot one was reversing into while the other tried to drive into head on. But in big cities we are getting closer to parking paradoxes - an episode of Seinfeld spring to mind where one of the characters took week off work and given up driving all together because earlier that fortnight he managed to secure "great parking spot" almost in front of his door and he didn't want to loose it.

Quite agree om and westpig. Malicious damage to the property of total strangers, or indeed much-hated neighbours, is curiously despicable.

Another thing people do in their drunken youth is run over cars or run along the tops of them when they are parked. I know two people who have done this. While I do still speak to them, I took a very disapproving line on the act and remember it.
This is my parking space - Westpig
it's fairly simple really isn't it ' don't do to others what you wouldn't want done to you'

wouldn't mind betting the cretin that keyed the car, would be the first to bleat to the rooftops if someone did it to his car

This happened to my Capri in the early 90s, parked overnight in a student area of Bristol - crushed the power bulge on the bonnet. I was gutted. In the same area, I also went to my subsequent Volvo 340 in the morning to find a doner kebab (with salad) thrown all over it. Nice.

Yeah, tasty. Was there any chili sauce in it though? Useless without chili sauce.

It's curious that everyone is getting so worked up about this practice as applied to motoring, but is so tolerant of the equivalent in other fields.
Ever saved a seat for someone in a restaurant, film, play, concert etc? A newcomer enquires "Excuse me, is this seat taken?" You reply, "Sorry, I'm saving it for a friend" and the the stranger shrugs and goes off to find another seat.
One of you bags a table in the pub, the others go off and order some food and get the drinks. Any problem there? Sounds a pretty normal everyday reasonable occurence to me.

Totally the wrong thread, but...

Oldish lady in Range Rover taking care to adjust her position prior to backing into a parking space. Young city slicker in a Porche whizzes forward into the space, gets out and jokes, "You can do that when you have passed your test misses". Oldish lady hesitates a little, engages low ratio and reverses back into the space. She says, "You can do that when you are old and rich, sonny".

I had a plonker 'steal' a space I'd been waiting for at a shopping centre, not only that but he laughed about it too. Last bit of shopping I did was a large potato from Savacentre and so upon leaving I shoved it up his exhaust. Took some doing as it was a very tight fit. I wonder if he was laughing when his car stopped? Wonder what his wife and kids thought....

In a similar vein to glowplug getting even with the space thief I remember seeing a CCTV video where a chav type drove straight into a space that a lady had been waiting to reverse into .He just laughed at her when she had a go at him and he walked off.

Same camera ten minutes later , lady returns , presumably after parking elsewhere , and calmly proceeds to let down all four of his tyres.

A builder I know once got into one of these situations. He was out one night with his girlfriend parking in a cinema car park. He was waiting as a car pulled out of a space but before he had chance to pull into it, another car shot into it and four lads got out.
He wound his window down and said something but the lads instantly turned aggressive and headed over to his car. They threatened him and called him some names that he took exception to, so he got out of the car, sized up the biggest one of them (who happened to be the driver) and hit him in the face. And made it clear to the others that they ought to back off, which they did...
Charges of assault were dropped but he had to pay a bill for a dental examination.

Not pleasant, and not the way I would have handled it, but its good to hear about antisocial scum occasionally getting their come-uppance. And a reminder that you never know who you're up against...

It happened to me at Ikea of all places in Brent Cross a couple of years ago. I'd queued for 15 minutes to get into the car loading area (for those who haven't experienced the unadulterated joy that is a shopping expedition to Ikea, to save them having to employ trolley attendants, you aren't allowed to take the trolley to the car, but are expected to retrieve your car, exit the car park, join a queue to re-enter it, and then drive to a loading bay.

I duly did this, and eventually found a free loading bay. I backed in to be met by a woman who ran up to the car and started banging on the roof. She then informed me that I "can't park here" because she's saving the space for her boyfriend.

I got out of the car and opened my mouth to start arguing back. Decided this was pointless as she was becoming completely hysterical, so went about loading up while COMPLETELY ignoring her. She continued to follow me from trolley to car and back, all the time ranting and screaming. When done, I got back in the car, smiled politely and enquired if she now felt better for her little rant, and drove calmly away.

I was driving a company car, so if she had decided to key it or damage it, a) it wouldn't have bothered me and b) the company lawyers would have screwed her into the ground. Plus actually not arguing makes you feel so much better.

There are some utter idiots around.

Cheers

And let me guess, during all her ranting, the boyfriend hadn't even turned up to fill the space?
