Unusual things at a filling station - artful dodger {P}
This morning I went to my local filling station and was surprised to see a single decker bus on the forecourt. It was angled so it blocked the lanes between both sets of pumps. I thought this was very unusual, buit then I was told it could not move it as it had a flat battery.

What other unusual things have you seen happening on a forecourt?

Someone else other than me refueling the car when the pump is on the nearside and the filler cap is on the offside.

What's unusual about that! I do it all the time. It's very frustrating to be stuck in a long queue at the petrol station when there are plenty of pumps free. Hoses are plenty long enougth to reach.

Local bus company fill their vehicles (big single deckers) at one of my local garages, you should see the mess. I'm sure they would take more care if they were paying for it themselves.

On a completely different subject (but related to mess /messy vehicles in general), why is it that in Switzerland, you never see a grotty bin lorry (you see clean ones). They must hose them down at the end of each shift.

But there again you never see much litter there either, (plenty of graffiti on the railway bridges though).

I was waiting for someone on a car park next to a petrol station when some lad with trackies and Rockports on (cool, I know) calmly drives a blue M reg Escort up to a pump, gets out, and then legs it like a bat out of hell. That piqued my interest.

It got better when a completely different lad ran over to it 3 minutes later and hammered it away from the petrol station taking out cones and a sign!

The pay station located down several steps from pump level at a site,( recently closed,) in Kingston.
The pumps were in the open with no canopy and no big logo/price display.
All due to not obscuring the view from flats behind the site.

But surely the flats that are going to be built on the site will obscure the view of the flats behind.........

Tesco's petrol station employees going absolutely spare when the tills system went down about two months ago - most customers, as you will be fully aware, pay by credit or debit card...:-)

The person behind the checkout not being on the phone!

I was at one of the Gatwick filling stations a couple of weeks ago.
There was a queue at the desk due to problems identifying the pump numbers.
Someone had painted the posts supporting the canopy and yes the pump numbers could no longer be identified from the desk. You can guess some of the conversations... its the silver one over there etc...

The unhappy staff had no time to be on they phone.

Several years ago an OAP started to fill his car up with the wrong fuel, the attendant ran out and warned him, much mutterings but then it was noticed that his front near side tyre was flat. The attendant once more went out and told him to get it fixed. The OAP swore that all and sundry were out to rip him off and promptly drove off up a busy road lurching all over the place.

Just before leaded petrol vanished from the forecourts, two OAPs drove in with a brand new car and tried to fill it with leaded petrol. The nozzle would not fit and they struggled, so the attendant went to help, it was pointed out that their car must use unleaded petrol as it had a catalyst. No, it had to be leaded because they got more supermarket points due to the increased cost of the leaded fuel. At that the point the attendant left them to their own devices. I often wonder how much their first MOT would have cost.

Ironically, since the filling station closed, the whole site has a very tall solid fence all round it, that certainly , very significantly obsures the view.

I have just checked and the site is still for sale at £2.2M.

The best thing I ever saw was Mr cool driving onto the busy forecourt and upto the pump at 50mph (slight exageration - but it was fast) window down music blaring, elbow on the open window & one handed steering- you get the picture. Now petrol pumps tend to be perched on a raised level with a kerb around them - he hit the kerb with his rear wheel as he swung it round & damaged his alloy and all the air escaped from his tyre in one go - he looked a complete plonker - I though it was hilarious - he did not take kindly to my laughing but I could not control myself.

I worked in one so I saw quite a few, including a bloke jump-starting his car on the forecourt, and the tills going down (which took out the pumps) at 18:00 on a Friday for 4 hours. And we don't care how much the yellow light on the dash is flashing at you you'll still have to drive the 1.5m to the next station.

In Stockport the fire brigade fills up the tenders etc at Tesco (usually) or more rarely the pricey Texaco on the A6.
The local Lamborghini dealer also uses the Texaco to fill up customers cars - yes we do have a Lamborghini dealer in Stockport!

When I was working in a filling station one evening (quiet period) I watched a chap pull up exactly in the middle of two lanes (pump hoses long enough to reach far side of car 2 cars side by side gap in the middle, you know the type of layout).

He got out and selected his grade nozzle then realised that the filler was on the other side and the hose would not reach so he replaced the nozzle and walked around other side.

He selected his grade nozzle from the pump that side then realised that the hose would not reach as he was too far from the pump. Replaced nozzle and got back in car.

Drove off forecourt (which was empty except for him loads of room to move!) and came around again, this time parking exactly in the middle of the next 2 lanes over from where he had been.

He repeated the select / too short / replace bit (at least he remembered which side!) got back in his car and drove off.

I guess he got some fuel somewhere as I diddn't see his car by the side of the road when I drove home.

I used to love those filling stations that offered both loos and the mixture for 2-stroke engines - the signs appeared as "2-stroke Toilets".

There was a lovely sign I saw in a village on the west coast of Scotland:
P
Free
Toilets......

Last time I stopped at the Oxford services on the M40 there was a splendid sign in the gents that said 'Welcome Break apologises for the self-service nature of the facilities'. I'd love to know what it is that Welcome Break does for gentlemen at other service stations that you have to do for yourself at Oxford.
