Audi A2 problem - A2owner
Hi
I have had my A2 for 3 years. Always serviced by Audi Garage.
The car has developed a coolant issue which apparently Audi can't resolve - they have been in contact with Audi Germany who say to replace the engine. As the car is 3 years old and has done 120k miles they are basically saying the car has had it.
This is particularly annoying as they have just charged me £800 (to replace the thermostat, radiator, water pump etc )- no change to the problem.
Is this reasonable? I feel aggrieved at losing a car probabaly worth £5k if it did not have this issue.
To be fair the garage has tried hard.
I do not know what to expect as the engine is aluminium (I think) and obviously Audi have discontinued the A2
Grateful for any advice.
Anthony

What's wrong with it? Which engine? Sounds like overheating judging by the parts they've replaced.

Whilst it may have a cooling problem, it shouldn't be anything a competent independent shouldn't be able to sort. Even if it needs a 'new' engine, I'd expect to be able to get one from a breakers and have it fitted for <£2K. One suspects the Audi garage is more interested in selling you a new car, rather than actually getting their hands dirty.....

As Aprilia says, give us a bit more info?

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

Thanks for this
the car is a 1.4 diesel engine
Yes it is overheating
they water/steam vents at the water reservoir they have replaced virtually everything to do with the water system!
and I am still no further on.
The car has been pressure tested - no problems
They are trying to tell me that there must be an obstruction (or something in the engine block which is causing this)
I am not technical but it does seem a bit of a fob off??

Corrosion in the block's water passages???

Sounds like the head gasket has gone, or the head is cracked. Have they had it off and had it pressure tested? Somehow I think not given you have only spend £800, and had all those other things done at the high dealer rates / parts prices. Time to find an independent me thinks.....

It might well be a head gasket, as RichardW thinks. The A2 OC people have some examples of head-gasket failure and remedies short of entire engine replacement. www.a2oc.net/forum/index.php Search under coolant I suggest.

Yes, likely head gasket or cracked/porous head. I would get it to an independent repairer - even so, you will need to brace yourself for a fairly large bill, but less than the cost of a new engine!
