Rear silencer is starting to rust round the tail pipe - are these easy to DIY ? - so many Fast Fit places will tell you "It's all rusted together, Sir - the whole lot needs replacing.."

Also any idea who manufactures the genuine GM front disks and pads?

Is it actually blowing, or just splitting apart? SWMBO's Zafira has a flippin great split in the outer casing of the rear silencer, but it's still gas tight. Went through the MOT no probs.

The rear box on my 1.8 looked like it was falling apart. On closer inspection, it was just the bottom of something that seemed to be a heat shield thing, which for some reason goes all the way round it. I removed those bits which were about to fall off and it passed the MoT no problem.

The reason they tell you that is because fitting only a new backbox can *sometimes* put additional stress on the rest of the exhaust system. Extra back pressure for instance. If the rest of the system is weak, where is the first place it will leak next?

If you do decide to replace it ask Masterfit for a quote. Whilst it will probably be a bit more, the quality will be similar to original whereas in my experience with those quicky fit places the quality matches the cheaper price. Nine years of life for an original Vauxhall back box on a Cavalier with two years use from each subsequent "cheaper" box.
