BMW 2.2L Oil (2003 E39) - Rupi
Hi

I am noticing that my E39 is taking up oil more frequently, I have done 112K and had to top up half litre after almost 600 miles.... sounds like too much?! Still running great but a little worried about the rate at which its taking up oil, anyone experience something similiar?

Also, what the best oil for these? I had to grab some oil in emergency from a service station (Castrol Sport Edge 0W-40), is this ok?

By the way had its Oil Service only 3 months ago.

Thanks!

Anything from a 5W-30 to a 15W-40 synthetic should be OK in these. 0W-40 is a little thinner than recommended at the 'winter' grade - but I can't see it being unsuitable. 0.5 litre per 600 miles is pretty much at the limit of consumption - any more and you need to do remedial work on the engine. Could be bore wear, valve guide wear - even a leak! (have you checked?).
I would get it to a garage for a cylinder leak-down test and some basic mechanical diagnostics to pin-point the problem.

i am not an expert on e39 engines, only a very happy e39 owner.

as far as i know, to the best of my knowledge, the bmw recommended oils for these cars are the castrol long-life synthetic versions. the current castrol oils that meet bmw specs are:

Castrol EDGE 0W-30 - (Replaces Castrol SLX Longtec 0W-30 ) - ACEA A3/B3/B4 API CF, Meets the engine test requirements of API SM, MB 229.3, 229.5, GM-LL-A-025, GM-LL-B-025, VW 502 00/503 01/505 00, and BMW LL01

Castrol EDGE Sport 0W-40 -(Replaces Castrol Formula RS 0W-40 ) - ACEA A3/B3/B4/C3, API SM/CF,
BMW Longlife-04, Daimler Chrysler MB 229.31, Porsche

you can find the official castrol oil for your car at

i agree with aprilia that your oil consumption needs investigating. my car with much higher mileage than yours hardly uses any oil between its 20,000 mile oil change intervals. ( i have never had to top it up! )

Thank you Dalglish and Aprilia, I am suspecting an oil leak somewhere but will have to get it looked at, BMW want £135 plus vat to spend an hour looking at it!! Hopefully it is something simple to fix.

Thanks
