clanks and clonks - hyundai coupe - adam f
i have tried to get answers inb the past but know i will try and explain the best way i can.

the car is a 1997 2.0 se

when i turn the steering wheel on full lock and then relase it i get a clunk. This does this when i turn the steering wheel both ways.
When i am driving and brake i get the same cunk.
i originally thought it was the brakes so i have had the discs and pads replaced.
i am now thinking i might need to replace the shock absorbers? do you think that might be the problem?

could it be my track rod ends? steering rack?

any help is much appreciated

have you checked anti roll bar?? steering rack loose/worn?? have you jacked it up checked for "play" any signs of rubbing, plenty to go at !! good luck.

It needs jacking up with the weight off the front wheels and the use of a good jemmy to go through every joint and fixing.

My 1997 Alfa 145 emits these clunks and has done so on and off for the last 70,000 miles. No-one has ever got to the bottom of it. Under warranty I had the steering rack changed - still clonked afterwards.

Dealer mechanics, independent mechanics and MOT testers have never found the culprit. Sometimes it clonks a lot and sometimes very little, even on the same route. The only action that always results in a clonk is rapid side-to-side turning of the steering wheel. Some suggest strup tops, some suggest 'shock absorbers', but I am loathe to have any of them changed at what would be a vast expense on a maybe.

i did take it for a mot but nothing picked up there. i will get my local mobile mechanic to see what it might be.
also what is a jemmy

also what is a jemmy

A short crowbar.

Something like a tyre lever, or any sturdy metal bar would suffice though.

took car for a "pre MOT" to check out things etc etc.

nearside rear anti-rollbar linkage has slight playin ball joint.
the noise seems to be coming from front.
if it is anti roll bar bushes on front do you know how much it would cost to rectify?
