Should the ABS light, illuminate and the go off, when ignition is on. And remain OFF when car is started?
or should it come on with the ignition and remain ON, and swich off AFTER the engine is started

It varies. What car is it?

As long as it's off when you're driving, the ABS is working. Some cars it goes off before you've started the engine, other cars it doesn't go off until you begin to move at a given speed - e.g. 5mph (think some old model Landrovers were like this).

A Honda Civic would be my guess. But I'll await confirmation before editing it into the subject header - (sigh!)

Was not a model specific question, but yes I do have a Honda Civic.
Light comes on with ignition - remains on till engine running.

My VW Bora is the same.

As TVM says, it varies between cars.
One of my old Cavalier's, the light went out 4 seconds after turning the ignition key without the engine running, but another Cavalier I had, the light didn't go out until the engine had been started.

As has been said, you only have a problem if it comes on when you're actually driving.

There used to be a chart in a garage I used at one time, all the times for different makes and models, something to do with the MoT.

No matter what car it is - its a MOT Requirment, that the Light comes ON - and then goes OFF, if its stays on then its faliure, if it doesnt come and at all this is also a faliure
