Mitsubishi Grandis - Clock Spring - NeilD
Hi All,

My new (4 months old, 3,500 miles) Mitsubishi Grandis broke down with the following symptoms:

Vibratrion/clonky noises sometimes when turning the wheel (only small turns needed)
Traction control light constantly flickering, resulting in loss of power (turning the TC off made no difference).

The dealer says it's the airbag Clock Spring. Is this likely to be correct? No airbag lights were on on the dash that I noticed.

If this is the case, then would this have prevented my airbag from going off in the case of an accident?

Cheers for any help,

-Neil

Unlikely to be the airbag clockspring, but possibly the steering angle/rate of turn sensor which is usually attached to the airbag clockspring mechanism and rotates with steering angle movements. This works in conjunction with the traction/stability control system.

On my Grandis Diesel the sensor as above also has a fault and turns off the TCS. I have been waiting for a replacement part for 5 weeks from Mitsubishi. At least I can still drive it !! It would appear that it is a common problem but no recall?

Mitsubishi Motors "did not do re-calls in the past" (1970's to late 1990's

Mitsubishi Motors forgot about re-call problems and issued few re-calls) - may be they have started to issue re-calls again or may be they have just forgotten.
