Think I'm gonna get a 5 series. Volume 2 - Blue {P}

Ok ok, I'm in two minds about whether to even post this given my recent history with changing my mind about cars but....

Whilst out and about I've seen two cars I like the look of, the best of the two, and one that my dad has (quite suprisingly) told me that he thinks is much nicer looking than the BMW, is a Jaguar X-Type 2.5 V6 AWD.

It's a 2001 51, manual transmission, full leather and it looks FANTASTIC from the outside. £6,500 with full Jag History and 100K on the clock. The only thing to concern me is that AWD sounds like it might sap all of the power from the car and make it extremely thirsty. Am I right to think this? Also, are these units prone to going wrong with horrible consequences? I know the rest of the car is based on mondeo so should be quite a good drive.

The only other car that I noticefd whilst walking the dog was a Saab 9-3 (2002 onwards model) and I have to say I thought it to be very attractive, I gather they're basically a Vectra, but are they very well built? I'd be a bit nervous of it.

Anyway, sorry to sound like I'm changing my mind again, if I wasn't a long registered user I'm beginning to think people would suspect me of been a troll!

Hmm, think I'll give the AWD models a miss, don't think I can be doing with the hassle!

Still looking at others though...

For someone of our age I see no value in the X-Type over the Mondeo its built on - in this case, a nice ST220?
Think I'm gonna get a 5 series - Blue {P}
Yeah, I was thinking ST220 but couldn't find anything suitable, anyway, since then I've found an Accord SE Exec (new style) for £6,500. I quite fancy that...

I used to be indecisive but now I'm just not sure. :-)

Blue,

Sorry to keep nipping into your thread mate but it's like you're me with your car choices! When the time comes I'm seriously thinking of either a 530 or an ST220 and I've got to be honest, I'm leaning towards the ST.

I don't know what your exact criteria is but there's a black ST with some really low mileage on (around 30k I think) on Autotrader when I do a national search. The only thing is, it's really cheap. Really cheap for the miles so whether that means there's something up with it I don't know.

I'll have a look for it now though just in case.
Think I'm gonna get a 5 series - Adam {P}
Here we go:

tinyurl.com/fkppu

27k it's got on although on second look it's not that much cheaper. If you're a bit less choosy with the miles then there are a lot of nice looking ST's there. They seem to get an awful lot of kit too.
Think I'm gonna get a 5 series - Blue {P}
I've just done a national search under £7K and didn't find one car, not a single one!

I'm always a bit suspicous when buying the cheapest of a particular model that is available, hence why I'm slightly suspicous of the Accord I've found, it's one of about 6 in the country available fo under £7K...

Blue
Think I'm gonna get a 5 series - MichaelR
Do you honestly think a Honda with a VTEC engine is in the same league as 3 litre BMW's and the ST220? Really, it isnt. Nice car - compared to a Mondeo Ghia or perhaps a 318, but nowhere near a 530 or ST220.

I've test driven the ST220 and it was awesome - if I didnt have a love affair with the E39, I'd buy one.
Think I'm gonna get a 5 series - Blue {P}
I know for a fact the I-VTEC isn't in the same leauge as a 6-cylinder BMW, but I'm not just concerned with engine alone, and I've had a strong affection for the Accord since I started out on my brief career with Honda.

I think I've still got some soul searching to do yet!

Blue
Think I'm gonna get a 5 series - MichaelR
Nothing about the car is in the same league - I picked a Mk2 MONDEO over the 98-03 Accord, let alone a 5 Series.
Think I'm gonna get a 5 series - Blue {P}
Looks like we'll have to agree to disagree, one of the things that I remember best about the Accord was just how satisfied I used to be when I drove it, and it is certainly better than the MK1 Mondeo IMO. Never mind, my mind is far from made up, I haven't done any research on the problems that these things can have as they get older. I've heard that poor ride quality from the 17" wheels is prevalent, and they're the ones that suit the Accord best.

The Accord has a timing belt AFAIK, the BMW uses a timing chain doesn't it? I'd rather have a timing chain it has to be said.

Blue
Think I'm gonna get a 5 series - Blue {P}
Oh, and for what it's worth, I still think the Accord has the best seats I've ever parked my behind on. :-)

Just to get this straight as I noticed you compared a £7K Accord to a sub £2K Mondeo, you are referring to the new style Accord yes?

Blue
Think I'm gonna get a 5 series - MichaelR
I've not looked at the Accord market for some time as I find them as appealing as eating wallpaper paste, but I am assuming £6-7k doesn't give you a choice of loads of new shape ones, so I figured he was talking about the shape introduced in 1998.

Obviously I would not be so daft as to compare current generation Accord to previous shape Mondeo.
Think I'm gonna get a 5 series - omeganoway
I am not a mondeo person at all BUT those new shape ST 's with the shiny wheels look very nice indeed.One of the few cars that would make me give it a second glance.

A lady who goes to my yoga classes had a 523I of 1999-2000 vintage. A lovely car. Come last winter, however, when we had 6 inches of snow, she could not drive it up our local hill.
I gave here a lift in my Fiesta.

She has subsequently sold it and bought a fwd car.

Beware of rwd cars in snow, traction control or not .. especially with wide tyres. They can be VERY tricky to drive .

Well, a night to sleep on it has not helped one little bit, I really do think I am in total deadlock here:-

Accord - Better looking than the 3 series, nicer interior, cheaper to run, tax, insure, more reliable. However, it isn't as powerful by a long chalk (only 154bhp), concerns over effects of 17" alloys on ride and handling.

BMW - Siliky BMW 6 cylinder 2.5 engine kicking out just under 200 bhp, will be a superb drive, has sat nav and TV integrated. However, likely to cost £££ more to run, not likely to be as reliable over the next 30K as the Honda, much blander to look at, interior not as comfortable or nice to look at.

Both cars are the same price, the Accord is 03 reg with totally FULL documented main dealer history (confirmed by the dealer as well, I rang them) and is a one owner car, the BMW is 51 reg, has a full independant history and is two owner.

The Accord has covered 127K miles, the BMW 108K miles.

It really is neck and neck, even writing out the pros and cons of each model here hasn't helped me to decide. I'm asking the trader selling the Accord to send me some extra pics, I'm hoping a good look at the inside will help me compare the two. I know for a fact that I've always liked the Accord to look at and sit in, but I know I also really fancy something dead powerfu!

Someone tell me what to do!

Right, I've decided to go and buy the 325, if that isn't available anymore then I will go an buy the Accord as I really like it almost as much as I like the idea of having 194 horses under my right foot :-)

Erm, I had a look at the Legacy but I can't say that it's for me, I was just about to buy the 325 tonight but have found out that the sat nav disc is missing so I can't test the system until after I've bought it, think I'll give that a miss for now!

Anyway, still searching and I will let you all know when I find something!!

P.S. I had just got in from a night out and was mortal drunk when I last posted!
Think I'm gonna get a 5 series - MichaelR
You are going to give up a bargain priced car becuase the satnav disc is missing? Seriously, who cares about that? The price is excellent even without the navigation system, does it really matter if it doesnt work?
Think I'm gonna get a 5 series - cheddar
The system could be knackered with no way to test it without a disc, also if it was that much of a bargain it woulkd have sold while Blue was pondering Accords etc.

i think the original e39 that started this thread was sold within a few days of blue mentioning it.

i admit, i am lost as to which car blue is talking about in his last post - because he has flip-flopped so much between different cars! :: ;-) ::
Think I'm gonna get a 5 series - Blue {P}
I know, I'm a nightmare once I get some money burning a hole in my pocket, seeing as my Focus is sold I now have £6,500 burning a hole there and I just CAN'T decide what I *really* want!

The car we're referring to is a 2001 51 325i SE for £6,300, the problem I have is that there is no way to test a major system on the car (the only reason I'm buying this particular one if the truth be told) without the disc, if it's not working the system is as good as written off as they cost well over £1000.

I'm deeply concerned by this as the seller originally told me that the nav and TV worked fine, but now says the disc has never been there (this means it would have been impossible to have tested it in the first place)

I'm the buyer with cash sitting waiting so am in a fairly decent position and I won't rush in to make what could be an expensive mistake!

Anyway, I'm off to the auctions now, will see if anything grabs my eye there!

Blue
Think I'm gonna get a 5 series - Blue {P}
Oh, forgot to mention, if I didn't want the sat nav I actually have a choice of a few more 325is for about the same price and on a similar plate, but they have CD players, I also found out that the one I'm looking at has NO cd player, if I want one I have to install a multichanger.... That instanty adds c. £200 to the cost of the car, making it seem less of a bargain really...

Blue
Think I'm gonna get a 5 series - Statistical outlier
Ignore the satnav - you can get a Tomtom system for peanuts. It will be removable if you are on holiday / using other cars, work almost as well (or better, depending on who you ask) as a built in (only no dead-rekoning if signal weak), will be cheaply updateable, can have free speed camera warnings etc etc... Much easier.
Think I'm gonna get a 5 series - y2k+4
I would say go have a look around at these other cars thoroughly. See how low a price you get them (perhaps argue there's an identical one with sat-nav and everything for £6,300) and then decide which is the best value. As said, you can get modern sat-nav's for relative peanuts, so I would push to pay £6,000 for a non-sat nav one and then look at an afternarket one.
Think I'm gonna get a 5 series - MichaelR
I disagree with your opinion on the satnav, blue.

IF its broken, which it probably isnt, it isnt £1000. The nav computer on its own is considerably less, you can test the rest of the system (TV etc) WITHOUT the nav disc. A CD changer can be bought for £80 and plugs right in.

The 16:9 System is very desireable not only for Satnav - I really want one myself yet would never use the satnav option - its better for the television, OBC functions, etc etc..

Turning this car down based on the navigation alone is frankly daft.
Think I'm gonna get a 5 series - Blue {P}
It's not the widescreen system though, it's the older one. I already have a Tom Tom but would like to have the integrated one as a backup, and I refuse to have a big funky looking gadget sitting in my dashboard that may not work. Anyway, whilst I've been looking around I've found a couple of other cars including the odd coupe that may or may not fit the bill, obviously without the Nav but still nice cars.

The auctions were rubbish by the way!

Think I'm gonna get a 5 series - MichaelR

All BMW sat Navs come in two versions - Professional and Business.

The 'Business' series on the E46 (up until the day it stopped production in 2005) only comes in a 2.5" x 2" or so tiny screen, monochrome. It does the job without any fancy graphics - no bird's eye for example. You cannot get it to play TV for instance. I might be wrong, but I think 'Business' version even on the E90 is also monochrome.

The 16:9 screen is from the 'Professional' series is a much bigger colour screen.
Think I'm gonna get a 5 series - Blue {P}
Well I didn't get the car, the bonnet was rusting through underneath the leading edge, and the engine oil level light came on within seconds of starting the car.

Anyway, after trudging further down the country to Cqar Giant and ascertaining that they had nothing suitable either, I came home. Not an entirely succesful day but at least I avoided buying a dodgy one!

Anyway, on the way back I saw a few Audi A4s that I like the look of, and suprisingly there are several not too far away that are in budget.

Can somebody tell me whether there is a difference between a 2.0 petrol and a 2.0 FSi? Pros and Cons etc. I'v checked CBC but it barely mentions the FSI. My concerns relate to the cambelt changes on these cars, I'm guessing they're affected by the 40K Mile interval thing?

Also quite like the TDi, although they are fewer in number at my money, but seem to offer decent performance, and my concerns there are the same as they were with my old car, diesel longevity before expensive engine work is needed.

Sorry for yet another slight change of course!

No doubt the seller described the car as 'mint'. Like I said further up, take any trader's description with a pinch of salt and don't believe that BMW's don't wear out and rust - even with FSH!. Hopefully this has been a useful lesson. Funnily enough I saw a very rusty E39 this morning - quite bad rust above the number plate recess and around the lock barrel, to be fair though its rare to see a rusty one.

Anyhow, I think you have taken indecisiveness to a new level. Why not go to one of the big car supermarkets (e.g. FOW) and browse around a few cars - sit in them etc and see what you like the feel of.
Think I'm gonna get a 5 series - Blue {P}
I ended up at Car Giant and had a look at a load of cars, I liked:-

Honda Accord (really started to fall for it when I sat in it)
Volvo S60 D5
3 series (even after the mornings disaster)
Audi A4 and to a slightly lesser extent, A6

My neighbour is the DP of the local Volvo main dealers and he's going to check what partex stock the group have coming in September.

I've looked at A4's and S60's this morning, I hadn't researched them properly before, it seems my mone gets me a good pick of some nice petrol 2.0 A4's but I'm concerned that these may be underpowered, alternatively I get a reasonable selection of S60 D5 models for the same money, these are far better equipped and far more powerful than the Audi, hence at the moment these are catching most of my attention.

My neighbour reckons they don't hear of much trouble with the D5 unit, and at 163bhp, it will be an incredibly powerful motor, a bit old manish, but that desn't really bother me, I could quite see myself with a black one with 17" alloys...

I've written off the idea of an Accord as my money does not buy a nice one, they're all knackers within my budget, I gathered this when i found the only nice clean one at Car Giant, fired it up and found it had some serious issues with revving suggesting some expensive work may have been required... The ones that actually still worked were al filthy old dog kennels :-(

Blue
Think I'm gonna get a 5 series - Adam {P}
Blue,

You're exactly like me mate. I've gone through so many car ideas that it's unreal. The S60 was one of the first ones I really liked. Not the diesel though - I'm still in a petrol moment of my life! I was looking at either the T5 or the 2.4T. I soon got put off these when I read that they don't handle the mileage too well; apparently becoming very baggy and steering becoming loose. Apparently, the diesel injectors of the D5 need replacing or something expensive at so many miles. I came to the conclusion that if I could afford to change cars frequently or buy much newer ones then an S60 would be for me but otherwise, no. A shame given they look very very nice.

I considered an Accord as they look gorgeous too but they're pricey for what you get and only have one reversing light. That sounds ridiculous! My Dad thinks I'm crazy but they don't look right unless they have two reversing lights!

I considered an A4 2.4 or even the A6 but think Audis (now anyway) are massively overrated and so, overpriced. Not to mention the laughably boring interiors.

3 Series - too expensive.

5 Series - Still considering a 530.

Mondeo ST220 - Seriously considering - reckon I'll probably end up with one next year.
Think I'm gonna get a 5 series - cheddar
The A4 FSi is more powerful than the std 2.0 IIRC 150 v 125 bhp though there have been probs reported with the FSI. You would be disappointed with the engine refinement of a 2.0TDi A4 compared to your Focus yet alone a 1.9.

Think I'm gonna get a 5 series - MichaelR
I test drove a 2002 Audi A4 1.8T SE.

I thought it was a nice car - in much the same way that tea and scones at the local church is quite nice. It did not exicte me or make me itch to own it one bit, although it was difficult to put my finger on anything particularly wrong with it. It wasn't actually THAT quick, it didn't handle THAT well, but it was well built, although very poorly specified.

As a contrast, I got out of a 530i Sport in absolutely no doubt as to which car I had to own next. It was THAT good.

As for the S60 - seems to me to be the car you buy only if you can't stick the image of the 5 Series, otherwise the 5 is a more capable car. And sorry but under no stretch of the imagination can an S60 with a 163bhp engine be described as 'incredibly powerful' becuase it simply isnt :p
Think I'm gonna get a 5 series - Wales Forester
Adam, take a serious look at the S60 2.0T preferably in SE spec (leather, climate, etc.).
It's 180bhp, 5 cylinder and sounds sweet, goes quite fast enough in my opinion, handles good for a big motor, and returns about 30mpg knocking about.
I had an 02 plate bought in May 2005 with 87k and FVSH for £6900. Unfortunately I had to sell it in March 2006 due to a change in personal circumstances, but if things changed I'd buy another tomorrow without giving it a second thought.

The only real downside about the car was the poor turning circle, but you soon get used to it.

I'm a VERY different sort of car buyer. I do all my paper reseacrh before I look at a car, narrow it down to 5-7 and test drive them all. Decide which I like best and then look and look and look.

Eventually I find what I want in the condition and mileage for the price I want.

Believe it or not, behind the scenes I do actually do some research into what I buy, notice there isn't one car in my list that could be considered a knacker ;-)

I have to say I didn't expect it to be so difficult to decide on a car within this budget mind, and yes, I do tend to buy on a whim mainly because I get an endorphn release from buying things, even more so when I think that my whim is a good one, as most of my cars have proven to be, with the only notable exception been my first, a Fiesta MK3, and that was more my parent's whim than mine!

It's done for a very good reason. That being to stop the server getting slowed up with people that don't log out when they finish their session here and go off elsewhere. From what I understand , if everyone remained logged in, then everyone else here would suffer from a slow site.

The system automatically logs you out after approx 20 mins of inactivity. By having an open window and typing your reply counts as being inactive.

I went to view a much better car today, a BMW 323 Ci SE Coupe on a 1999 V reg, 102,000 miles with a genuine full BMW history, it looks lovely from the outside, nice wheels, good tyres, straight bodywork, drives beautifully, everything feels nice and tight just like a BMW should.

The seller wants £6,500 for it, the CD changer is missing and it has no cruise control so I'm going to try my luck when I can get back up there with my dad in tow and offer £6,000. Before anyone asks, buying it today wasn't an option for various reasons.

Unless I find a better Audi in the meantime I think this is the one I'm having! The only thing that puts me off a little is that the same money will buy me an 02 plate A4 or S60 against a V plate coupe. However, then I tend to think that at this age and budget, condition counts, and this coupe is in excellent condition.

Blue
Think I'm gonna get a 5 series - cheddar
IIRC the 323 (170 bhp 2.5ltr) could suffer / have suffered from the Nikasil liner probs where as the 325 (192 bhp 2.5ltr) would not.

Reckon you could get a newer and/or lower mileage one than that, perhaps a facelift 320i saloon or coupe (170 bhp 2.2ltr), even more silky than the bigger sixes and quite quick enough.
Think I'm gonna get a 5 series - Blue {P}
Hmmm, I hadn't thought of the Nikasil issue, can anyone confirm/deny this?

Blue
Think I'm gonna get a 5 series - Aprilia
yes, the M52 (2.5 litre up to 2001) was a Nikasil engine, whereas the M54 (a development of the the M52 used 2001-on) is not. Can't remember exact power figures but it is something like 170 vs. 190 BHP. Note that some of the early M54's went 'bang' due to problems with the lubrication system - so if its an early M54 then check carefully to see if its had any work and that the oil pressure is good.

blue - re bmw nikasil issue

1. in case anyone is paranoid or oversensitive and believes that i am getting at them, please first refer to
www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?f=4&t=33...1

2. then, please read
www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/index.htm?p_make=BMW...1

3. then as an e39 owner and enthusiast, speaking only from experience of very few of these cars, and stating clearly that i am not an expert, i will add this:

as far as i know, to the best of my knowledge, and the best of the knowledge i can find on this subject anywhere, the m52 was a nikasil engine in e39's manufactured before september 1998. since then the nikasil liner was dropped and steel liners used.
for all i know, the situation may have been different for the 3 series, and i do not have the time or inclination to find out for you.
i may be wrong along with everyone else regarding the e39 and nikasil; and the two posts above mine suggesting that 3 series 323 2.5 litre models up to year 2001 used nikasil engines may well be entirely true.

once again i would suggest that, in my opinion only, a thread headed e39 is not the place to ask questions about other models.

AFAIK the "Nikasil" version of the M52 engine was never fitted to the E46, I'm sure I recall reading that they were all fitted with the modified version (M52TU) which had steel liners.

I would certainly recommend checking with BMW UK just to make sure.

That would make sense because the E46 was launched in 1998, a couple of years into the life of the Nikasil engines, by which time BMW would have had experience of the problem in early E39s. This also fits with Dalglish's comment re post 98 cars being unaffected, worth checking out though.
Think I'm gonna get a 5 series - Aprilia
Just to clarify my post further up - I was really trying to say that the M52 ran to 2001 and then it was the M54. The M52 went through various stages of modifications. I think the M52 in the E46 chassis would be the 'Technical Update' engine ("M52TU"). These were also further modified late in production (2000MY ??) to take the double-VANOS head ( kind of VVT system working on inlet and exhaust cams, developed by Teves). Also blocks were manufacturerd out of both cast iron and aluminium/Nikasil depending on the target market (all US cars had cast-iron blocks for example) - but engines were made with Nikasil right up to the end of production - I'm sure because in 2000 I visited the engine plant in Steyr and they were definitely using Nikasil then. The big advantage of Nikasil is that it makes for a much lighter engine. Whether the particular car you are looking at has a Nikasil engine is hard to say - you would really need to contact BMW with the engine number to be 100% sure. If possible go for a post-2001 car with M54 engine - its basically a much-improved M52.

I've seen a 200 X reg 320 Ci Coupe which I'm thinking will have the more modern 2.2 170 bhp engine fitted, this is at a garage in Derby and I'm going to call them about a viewing on Saturday if possible. If the 320 is no good then I will happily buy the 323 on my doorstep as it is truly immaculate, the only reason that I'm tempted with the 320 (apart from been a more modern engine than the 323, having the same power output and been one year younger) is that it's much better specced.

****ALL DONE****

I've *finally* bought something! A 1999 V reg 323 Ci SE Coupe in Topaz Blue.

Over the moon with her as she is immaculate, went down to Derby this morning to look at a very nice one but it made a funny engine noise so we left well alone, ended up buying this one from Whitley Bay, which is barely 30 miles from my front door!

Can't wait for the roads to dry out so I can drive her properly :-)

The roads should be dry by next June - well this is Britain :)

Congrats on your purchase,

Nice car. Remember it's rear wheel drive and can bite the unweary !

Thoroughly check tyre condition and tyre pressures etc before using it 'hard'. Also be wise to check brake condition.

I well remember buying a BMW 5-series from Measham auctions. Looked in great condition and drove it home. Went fairly fast (not wrecklessly so) around a big roundabout near my home and nearly ended up coming off the road. Pulled onto the drive and checked the tyres and the N/S/F had about 5psi in it. Now, before I drive any 'strange' car I always check tyres and also look for nails etc.

Good point, I haven't checked the pressures yet, they are run flats for what it's worth but that's still no excuse for not checking them!

I think I've fell in love with it mind, it's soooooo nice to drive, and quiet and smooth on the motorway.

Shame about the fuel consumption but I think it's worth it not to have that dreadful diesel clatter anymore :-)

Dear Blue,

I hate you :p

Blue,
Unless documented in the recent past, an oil change, coolant and brake fluid (avoiding the ABS unit being gunged up) change is highly recommended - use the proper spec stuff. Check the tyres, make sure they are of a pukka make, I would have the wheels off and check pads and discs all round as well. Check the spare (Make sure it's got one!) Make sure you have the radio pass (or code dependng on age). Enjoy the car, as I always say you'll wither love it or hate it - no middle ground.
Think I'm gonna get a 5 series - Blue {P}
All of the history is fully documented, as far as I can tell it isn't due a brake fluid change yet, although I'll be double checking that soon, the oil is definately not due a change at present, I've also seen evidence that the coolant has been changed as required by the schedule.

The original owner was Arval (lease company) and they have left documents showing every bulb change the car has had up until about 4 years ago when it passed onto a private owner who has had everything done as and when necessary and kept the invoices :-)

So far I'm averaging 27mpg according to the computer, but judging by the rate that the needle is dropping I'm a little skeptical about that!

Run flats? I wonder why the owner changed them?

The alloys are not standard for this model, they actually appear to be from a Z4 where run flats would be standard...

One thought, that soundslike a potential mod' does your insurance co know ?

Cheers P

Yep, I mentioned that the car has BMW alloys fitted to it and the moron I was dealing with made some noise about alloys not been important as a mod, I didn't press the issue as it's happily all recorded on their tape now.

It took him three goes to get the number plate correct, and quite frankly the whole conversation was a laborious and frustrating experience! I'm going to see if they will accept my no claims proof this week, and may try Adrian Flux for a quote instead and see whether they can better it, if they can I'm going to cancel my original policy as following four phone calls to my insurers I've only spoken to someone who seemed to know what they did for a living once, the other three were clueless. It hasn't left me with a great impression!

Think I'm gonna get a 5 series - Blue {P}
Adam, you've got mail, finally!

Unfortunately since these pictures were taken someone has already thrown a drinking glass off the bonnet, causing a severe dent that I think may foil even Dent Wizard's awesome skill that has served me well before, and I also need to re-polish the boot lid as someone gossed all over it last night and now I have spit-etching in the paint, lovely.

Why can't people just bog off and leave well alone? The car never did anything to them!

Thanks for that mate, and well done on the rapid response!

Now then, bearing in mind that I live in the Tyne and Wear region, can anyone guess where they were taken? Unfortunately my digi cam is no where near wide angled enough to take in the full aspect of the frankly stunning location!

Thanks Robbie, haven't noticed you post in a while, hope the Accord is still going well, if I could have afforded a good'un I'd most likely be a fellow owner by now!

Yes, it's still going well. I only returned from France about eight weeks ago so wasn't around for over three months. I don't have a pc over there and rely on a French mobile for keeping in touch.

Hope you've managed to sort out the damage to your motor, and it wasn't too costly. I'll never understand the mentality of such people.
